An adult died due to complications of infl uenza during the second week of November. To protect the privacy of the family, no further information about the in- dividual will be released. "This is a sad reminder that fl u can be a seri- ous illness and can lead to complications and even death in some cases," Deputy Health Director, DeShay Oliver said. "With fl u cases increasing and COVID-19 still with us, it is tre- mendously important for people to get a fl u vaccine this year." Currently, North Carolina is seeing an in- crease in illnesses caused by respiratory vi- ruses other than COVID-19, including infl uen- za and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), that is greater than at any time since the COVID-19 pandemic began in March 2020. This week NCDHHS announced fi ve adult deaths from fl u in North Carolina, and emergency depart- ment visits for fl u-like illness are nearly double the percentage of the past two years. The CDC recommends fl u vaccination every year for everyone 6 months and older. Vac- cination is the best way to prevent infection with the fl u. Vaccination can also make illness milder for those who do get the fl u, making it especially important for those at higher risk of more serious outcomes, such as people over 65 years old, children younger than 5, preg- nant women and those with certain medical conditions such as asthma, diabetes, heart disease and obesity. Flu and COVID-19 vac- cines can be administered at the same visit. Flu vaccinations are available at hospitals, pharmacies, private medical offi ces, some federally qualifi ed health care centers and local health departments. The fl u vaccine is available at the Cleveland County Health Department for everyone 6 months and old- er with no appointment necessary Monday – Friday from 8:00 am – 4:30 pm. To fi nd a fl u vaccine near you, visit www.vaccines.gov/ fi nd-vaccines. In North Carolina, fl u infections are most common from late fall to early spring with ac- tivity usually peaking in January or February. The following precautions should be taken to protect against the spread of fl u and other vi- ruses: • Get your fl u vaccine. • Stay home from work or school when sick to avoid spreading infection to others. • Cover coughs and sneezes with a tissue and then discard the tissue promptly. • To layer up protection, people can practice the 3Ws — wearing a face covering over your nose and mouth, waiting 6 feet apart, and washing your hands often can help slow the spread of fl u and other respira- tory viruses. Individuals who feel ill should call ahead before going to a doctor's offi ce, local health department or urgent care to avoid exposing others. Flu symptoms include: • Fever • Cough and/or sore throat • Runny or stuffy nose • Headaches and/or body aches • Chills • Fatigue • Nausea, vomiting and/or diarrhea (most common in children) Antiviral drugs are available and can help prevent fl u infections from becoming more serious. Treatments work best if started soon after symptoms begin. If you feel sick, con- tact your doctor right away to see if you need treatment with a prescription antiviral drug. Treatment with a prescription antiviral drug is especially important for hospitalized patients, people with severe illness, and those who are at higher risk of serious fl u illness based on their age or health. A respiratory virus surveillance summary that includes information on COVID-19, RSV and fl u-related deaths and activity is posted by NCDHHS every Wednesday at https:// covid19.ncdhhs.gov/dashboard/respirato- ry-virus-surveillance.
