And that's for a very good reason. "The season is a little bit lighter in the sense that – I was pregnant while I was shooting all season," she says with a chuckle, "so I wanted to do cases that were just a little less heavy than the cases that we focused on last season." The new season gets underway Thursday, Oct. 27, with the award-winning writer and producer again applying her sardonic wit and unique perspective to cases where there has been an egregious miscarriage of justice and the criminal justice system has failed. That's certainly the case in the season opener, which spotlights since-debunked junk sciences that have sent innocent people to jail and specifically looks at the use of dog-scent testimony in court. "There (was) a dog handler in the '80s who would be called in to testify that his dogs could smell like the same scent on a murder weapon and connect it to a defendant," Friedman explains. "And it was used in a lot of cases to actually wrongfully convict people. So our particular case involves someone who we believe was wrongfully convicted and is still currently in prison in Florida." The second episode on Thursday recalls the infamous case of Casey Anthony, the Florida woman who was found not guilty for the 2008 murder of her three-year-old daughter Caylee, a case that Friedman says, "reflects our system and that convergence of media and the criminal legal system." "There was like trial by media before her court case ever happened," Friedman says, "and then there were trial consultants that were involved. And did they tip the scales of justice? It's hard to be able to tell but it's a really interesting case because it was so emblematic of our justice system in so many ways." Other episodes this season cover the death penalty, laws affecting pregnant women in certain states and stand-your-ground laws, all keying off a specific instance where justice was not served. "So many people don't really think about the system until they're in it," Friedman says. "And the goal of our show really is to try to find kind of creative ways to educate viewers who could end up on a jury and just inform people who might end up deliberating on cases like that."
