Brainerd Dispatch • October 16 - 22, 2022 •19 "High School" - Season 1 Get an unfiltered look at the highs and lows of adoles- cence with the new dramedy series "High School," pre- miering Friday, Oct. 14, on Amazon Freevee. Based on the memoir of the same name by bestselling indie pop duo Tegan and Sara (known for 2004's "Walking With a Ghost"), who also executive produce the series, "High School" is set to a backdrop of 1990s grunge and rave culture as a pair of twin sisters try to forge their own identities, each heading down individual paths of self-discovery. Joining Tegan and Sara on the executive production team are Laura Kitrell ("Insecure"), Jeremy Kleiner ("Moonlight," 2016) and Clea DuVall ("The In- tervention," 2016), the latter of whom also wrote and co-directed the series alongside "Grace and Frankie's" Rebecca Asher. The twins are played in the series by TikTok creators Railey and Seazynn Gilliland, while Amanda Fix ("North of Normal," 2022), C.J. Valleroy ("Unbroken," 2014), Cobie Smulders ("How I Met Your Mother"), Olivia Rouyre ("American Horror Stories"), Kyle Bornheimer ("Brooklyn Nine-Nine"), Brianne Tju ("I Know What You Did Last Summer"), Nate Corddry ("For All Mankind"), Esther McGregor ("Obi-Wan Kenobi") and new talent Dom Bergeron also star. "Dark Glasses" (2022) Shudder keeps the scares rolling with the new Ital- ian giallo horror film "Dark Glasses" (originally titled "Occhiali neri"), available Thursday, Oct. 13, via Prime Video. The historic, picturesque city of Rome has a dark shadow hanging over it as a serial killer known only as "The Cellist" has strangled three sex workers with cello chords. Luxury escort Diana (Ilenia Pastorelli, "They Call Me Jeeg," 2015) would be his next victim, but his attempt on her life results in blinding rather than death. As Diana adjusts to a life without sight, she and her new guide, a Chinese orphan named Chin (new talent Andrea Zhang), must do whatever they can to escape The Cellist as he attempts to finish what he started. Directed by Dario Argento ("Dracula 3D," 2012), "Dark Glasses," features a screenplay written by Argento and Franco Ferrini ("Once Upon a Time in America," 1984). The film also stars Asia Argento ("Land of the Dead," 2005), Andrea Gherpelli ("L'alligatore"), Mario Pirrello ("Yara," 2021), Maria Rosaria Russo ("We Can Do That," 2008) and Gennaro Iaccarino ("Rose Island," 2020). "The Curse of Bridge Hollow" (2022) Grab your favorite wooly sweater, sip on some hot apple cider and get into the spooky spirit of the season with the new family adventure comedy "The Curse of Bridge Hollow," premiering Friday, Oct. 14, on Netflix. After making a big move from Brooklyn, New York, to the small, sleepy town of Bridge Hollow, teenage Sydney (Priah Ferguson, "Stranger Things") just wants to make friends and to blend in at her new school. But when Sydney accidentally releases an ancient spirit that causes all of the town's Halloween decorations to come to life and wreak havoc on the residents, she's forced to team up with her logical, Halloween-hating dad (Marlon Wayans, "White Chicks," 2004) to save the day. Directed by Jeff Wadlow ("Are You Afraid of the Dark?"), "The Curse of Bridge Hollow" features a screenplay by Todd Berger ("The Happytime Murders," 2018) and Robert Rugan ("Alice's Misadventures in Wonderland," 2004). The film's cast is rounded out by Nia Vardalos ("My Big Fat Greek Wedding," 2002), Rob Riggle ("21 Jump Street," 2012), Holly J. Barrett ("Life in Pieces"), Kelly Rowland ("American Soul," 2019), Doug Dawson ("Z Nation"), Abi Monterey ("Doom Patrol"), Helen Slayton-Hughes ("Parks and Recre - ation"), Lauren Lapkus ("Good Girls") and Myles Perez ("Believe," 2014). "Spirit Rangers" - Season 1 Explore the beauty of North America and all the land has to offer with the new computer-animated pre- school series "Spirit Rangers," premiering Monday, Oct. 10, on Netflix. Inspired by stories from Indigenous tribes and the incredible, natural landscapes of Amer- ica's national parks, this fantasy-adventure series for youngsters follows siblings Kodi (voiced by new talent Wacinyeya Iwasaka Yracheta), Summer (newcomer Isis Celilo Rogers) and Eddy (Talon Proc Alford, "Spidey and His Amazing Friends") of the Chumash and Cowlitz Tribes, who have a shared secret: they're Spirit Rangers. Able to transform into their respective animal spirits to help protect the national park they call home, the kids take on all kinds of challenges, from helping a lost thunderbird to waking up a sleepy sun. Celebrating community, nature and the rich heritage of Native American storytelling, the series is created by Santa Ynez Chumash tribal member Karissa Valencia ("Vam - pirina") and is executive produced by Valencia and Chris Nee ("Doc McStuffins"). The "Spirit Rangers" voice cast also features Jaylan Evans ("Power Book III: Raising Kanan"), Devery Jacobs ("Reservation Dogs"), Cree Summer ("Atlantis: The Lost Empire," 2001), Wes Studi ("Penny Dreadful"), Tantoo Cardinal ("Stump- town"), Shaun Taylor-Corbett ("Hi-5"), Nyla Rose ("AEW Dynamite") and new actors Kimberly Guerrero and John Timothy.
