Email your community happening to: events@rutherfordweekly.com Sitting in the stands at the Tryon International Equestrian Center (TIEC) last Friday night was historic. For the fi rst time since 2019 the Special Olympics of North Carolina was holding its equestrian tournament. Covid shut down much of the Special Olympics events, but this year many events have returned. At least 50 Special Olympians from across North Carolina were introduced to a crowd of parents, friends and supporters on Friday night. TIEC has hosted world events at the facility, but had never hosted the Special Olympics, but it won't be the last, staff said. The President of the Special Olympics thanked the staff at TIEC with a message to return in 2023. TIEC has been preparing for the Special Olympics for three years and then COVID arrived, but last weekend a dream came true for so many athletes. "It's an honor and a privilege to welcome you here," said Sharon Decker, president of the Carolina Operations for the Tryon Equestrian Partners. She told the athletes they were competing in the stadium where equestrian athletes from 44 states and 28 countries had competed and they should feel especially proud. Decker offi cially declared the 2020 Special Olympics Equestrian Tournament was underway. "Let the games begin," she exclaimed. Wendy Schonfelt, head coach of the Mecklenburg County team, praised the work of theTIEC staff and everyone involved in Special Olympics. She has been a part of the athletic events since she was in high school. Later in life after the birth of a baby with disabilities, she continued her support of Special Olympians across the state and nation and shared her delight in being a part of the state event. Rutherford County didn't have any equestrian athletes, but maybe next year. TIEC provided the horses for the athletes as they competed in the indoor stadium Saturday and Sunday. Awards were presented throughout the competition and also on Saturday night during the Saturday Night Lights events. Coaches, families, and athletes spent a memorable weekend at TIEC and it was delightful to witness their enthusiasm and their pride as athletes. We can thank the late Eunice Kennedy Shriver for her passion to begin the Special Olympics in 1968. When the equestrian athletes return next year, do yourself a favor and attend the event. And in the meantime, as Rutherford County's Special Olympians compete, be there to support them. Be a volunteer with Rutherford County's Olympians and help those who make a way for these young people to compete in athletes. Thanks Allison Kennedy Dorsey and your team in Rutherford County for being there for these Olympians.
