Starring Hilary Swank ("Away") as celebrated report- er Eileen Fitzgerald, the series follows the writer as she es- capes the big city and begins following the trail of a series of missing Indigenous women in Anchorage, Alaska. And while she's settled hundreds of miles away from where she came, a mistake from her past follows Eileen to her new home. Helping Eileen in her investi- gation is Anchorage local Ro- salind "Roz" Friendly, por- trayed by "Monkey Beach" (2020) and "The Revenant" (2015) star, Grace Dove. In a teaser trailer released by ABC in August, Roz points Eileen in the direction of the missing women, telling her, "No one's gonna do anything about it. Not the cops, not the courts." Eileen quickly delves into the case — even setting up a wall of missing posters to motivate her in the investigation. Eileen is encouraged to fol- low where the investigation leads by her editor, and the rea- son she came to Alaska, Stan- ley Cornik. Played by "Scan- dal" scene stealer Jeff Perry, Stanley is an experienced lead- er who worked with Eileen years ago, before he returned to where he grew up in Alaska to run his own paper, the Alas- ka Daily. Stanley assigns the seemingly connected disap- pearances to Eileen, knowing that she has the skills to dig deeper than the Anchorage cops who've let these cases go cold. Giving a pep talk to his jour- nalists in the "Alaska Daily" trailer, Stanley says, "Good journalism is what somebody doesn't want you to know." Ei- leen is undoubtedly going to encounter what the communi- ty doesn't want her to know, given that she is looking into disappearances that have been swept aside by authori- ties. In a city full of secrets, it's guaranteed that an outsider poking around sensitive issues will come up against a few bar- riers. Haunted by an undefined "fall from grace" back in New York, Eileen has nothing left to lose, everything to prove and ambition that will bowl over those standing in the way of justice. The palpable mystery that hangs over Anchorage is summed up by a man, played by Joe Tippett ("Mare of East- town"), who tells Eileen over drinks in the first "Alaska Dai- ly" teaser, released in June, "Outsiders come to Alaska to disappear or reinvent them- selves," before asking her, "So, which is it?" It is unclear whether or not the scandal that ran Eileen out of New York is going to haunt her in An- chorage, but at least she seems to have something in common with many of her new neigh- bors — a difficult past. What may have started as a disap- pearing act for Eileen turns into a personal and career reinven- tion when she begins her work at the Alaska Daily. "Alaska Daily" also stars Craig Frank ("Silicon Valley") as Austin Teague, Meredith Holzman ("The Good Fight") as Claire Muncy, Ami Park ("Where We Begin" 2020) as Yuna Park, Pablo Castelblanco ("Room 104") as Gabriel Tovar and Matt Malloy ("I Love That For You") as Bob Young. With such a stellar cast, "Alaska Dai- ly" counts itself as one of the most anticipated series of the fall. The series is also executive produced by Swank and credits another Oscar winner as its creator and writer. Series cre- ator Tom McCarthy is probably most well known as the direc- tor and co-writer of the 2015 Best Picture Academy Award- winning film, "Spotlight." That movie told the story of the Bos- ton Globe Spotlight team of re- porters that broke the coverup of widespread sexual abuse perpetrated by Roman Catho- lic priests in the Boston area. McCarthy treated the sensi- tive subject matter of "Spot- light" with respect on the big screen, and he appears to be doing the same with his first foray into broadcast television with "Alaska Daily." Two mem- bers of the Anchorage Daily News — Ryan Binkley, head of Binkley Co., owner of the pa- per, and special projects editor Kyle Hopkins — are among the series' executive producers and both lend their expertise to the series. Hopkins was lead re- porter for the Anchorage Daily News "Lawless" project, which was the product of two years of reporting on sexual vi- olence in Alaska that won a Pulitzer Prize for Public Service.
