In the late '70s and early '80s, millions of view- ers tuned in each week to watch as passengers had ro- mantic and sometimes humor- ous adventures under the watchful eye of Capt. Stubing (Gavin MacLeod, "The Mary Tyler Moore Show") and his crew in "The Love Boat." Now, the iconic show has been rei- magined as a competition dat- ing series. Co-hosts and real-life couple Rebecca Romijn ("X-Men," 2000) and Jerry O'Connell ("Scream 2," 1997) welcome viewers aboard the reality TV series "The Real Love Boat," premiering Wednesday, Oct. 5, on CBS. Shortly after news broke that they would be host- ing the new dating show, Romijn and O'Connell released a joint statement expressing their enthusiasm for the gig. "After years of consuming, arguing about and dissecting unscripted television, hosting a reality series where a group of singles look for love while aboard a Princess Cruise ship seemed like a dream come true," they said. "The Real Love Boat" prom- ises something for everyone as it follows hopeful singles look- ing for love while cruising around the Mediterranean on a luxury cruise ship. During the voyage, the singles will face compatibility and chemistry challenges and participate in destination dates as they navi- gate the tricky waters of ro- mance. In the end, one couple will win a cash prize and the ul- timate luxury Princess Cruise vacation. CBS is showing great faith in the series by premiering it after a new episode of "Survivor" and following it up with a new episode of "The Amazing Race." Sandwiching "The Real Love Boat" between the two mega-hit reality TV shows could be the ticket to an enter- taining evening of reality TV for viewers and a ratings win for the network.
