It was nearly a year ago that Cudahy resident Wade Michael Page fatally shot six people and wounded four others as he stormed into the Sikh Temple of Wisconsin, 7512 S. Howell Ave., before taking his own life. Oak Creek Mayor Steve Scaffidi readily recognizes the tragedy as "a horrific event" Free Community Ice Cream Social within his community But he says the city . has risen beyond one man's act of hatred. "This was clearly an event where a group of people were targeted, based on how they looked," Scaffidi said. "This is what I like to refer to as a turning point. At the end of the day, I think this is a great opportunity to show how Oak Creek welcomes people of all backgrounds." Several activities are planned this weekend to mark the one-year anniversary of the tragedy But not all of the upcoming events . will carry a strictly somber tone. The event carries a two-pronged purpose of remembering those who died in the tragedy and representing the house of worship's strengthened connection to the community . The event is symbolic in a number of ways. Members of the temple Scaffidi are calling the run-walk a chardhi kala fundraiser. In Punjabi, the native tongue spoken by many of the members of the temple, "chardhi kala" is translated into "positive attitude." The 6-kilometer length of the course also is designed to pay homage to the six people who lost their lives in the incident: Satwant Singh Kaleka, Paramjit Kaur, Suveg Singh Khattra, Prakash Singh, Ranjit Singh and Sita Singh. Members of the temple say the run-walk is an opportunity for the entire Oak Creek See SIKH on Page 5 DID YOU KNOW? • If the amount of water in your body is reduced by just 1 percent, you'll feel thirsty. • It is impossible to sneeze and keep one's eyes open at the same time. • Fifty-five percent of people yawn within 5 minutes of seeing someone else yawn. – For more facts, visit www.didyouknow.org.
