Local and far-flung performers are holding forth on the Next Act Theatre stage, 255 S. Water St., for eight shows. Three venues – sketch comedy, improvisation and stand-up comedy – will be on display (The . words "sketch and improv," in fact, were part of the festival's original title.) Recalled Ohio native Matt Kemple, festival founder and co-producer (with, for the past five years, Patrick Schmitz), "There was very little comedy happening in (Milwaukee in 2006, the year the festival began). Really more of an underground scene had formed, where you sort of needed to know someone to know where to see a show. I thought it would be fun to put a show together showcasing the local talent – a way to bring comedy into the mainstream. The first year saw hundreds of people come together, so a tradition was born, really, out of a small idea." The Milwaukee Comedy Festival, Kemple said, has come "to attract some of the most talented comedians in the country" – to say nothing of the country due north of our border. Among this eighth year's visiting comedians: Ohioan Spark Tabor, who mines news reports for stand-up material; Cash Grab, a gang of seven who became part of the trend in Canada for aspiring comedians to study comedy in college; Drew's Tumbler, female sketch artists from Illinois who draw on their musical theater backgrounds for routines; and Charles, a Washington state sketch duo known separately as Chuck (a sometime writer for the satirical Onion newspaper) and Charlie. Performer representatives of the host city include The Midnite Show, some of whose past members went on to perform on the old MADtv series, and funnymen Erik Koconis and Dobie Maxwell. A full schedule of shows supplements this story . Individual show tickets can be obtained for $15 through http://festival.milwaukeecomedy .com, or for $18 at the Next Act door. "We try to keep things reasonable (pricewise) so that everyone can enjoy a laugh" said Kemple, a Wauwatosa resident.
