"This Fool" Stand-up comic Chris Estrada is the creative force behind this comedy series set in working-class South Central Los Angeles and stars Estrada as Julio, a 30-year-old who still lives at home, dates the same girlfriend on and off since high school and works at a nonprofit that offers rehabilitation for gang members. Frankie Quinones, Laura Patalano and Michelle Ortiz also star. (ORIGINAL) "A League of Their Own" Penny Marshall's hit 1992 comedy about a World War II-era women's baseball league served as inspiration for this new series that tells the story of a whole generation of women who dreamed of playing professional baseball, focusing on Carson (Abbi Jacobson), Max (Chanté Adams) and a new ensemble of characters as they find their way on the field and in life. "Locke & Key" The eight-episode final season of this drama/fantasy series continues to follow the Locke siblings after their father's mysterious death, as they try to retrieve all the magical keys that set off the evil forces trying to take possession of them. (ORIGINAL) 10 • Terre Haute Tribune-Star • August 7 - 13, 2022 BEST GENE KELLY MOVIES "Anchors Aweigh" (1945) Kelly's legendary dance routine with animated mouse Jerry is a definite highlight of this sailors-on-leave romp also starring Frank Sinatra and Kathryn Grayson. "The Three Musketeers" (1948) Kelly plays D'Artagnan, alongside much of the MGM con- tract-player roster at the time, in this musical take on the legendary adventure tale. "The Pirate" (1948) A circus performer (Kelly) pretends to be the pirate a smitten woman (Judy Gar- land) wants to meet, in one of the attractions Turner Classic Movies will show during Kelly's "Summer Under the Stars" day Sunday, Aug. 7. "Take Me Out to the Ball Game" (1949) Kelly and Frank Sinatra (directed here by Busby Berkeley) do spirited harmonizing as professional baseball players who also happen to be vaudeville performers. "On the Town" (1949) Kelly (who also co-di- rected here, with Stanley Donen) and Sinatra are sailors again, this time on leave in New York (along with Jules Munshin), in this famously tuneful classic with a score by Leonard Bernstein, Betty Comden and Adolph Green. "Summer Stock" (1950) A theatrical company uses the barn of a farmer (Judy Garland) who even- tually falls for the troupe's director (Kelly). "Singin' in the Rain" (1952) Teaming him with Debbie Reynolds and Donald O'Connor, another of the screen's top musicals casts Kelly as a movie star making the transition from the silent era to "talkies" ... and needing a singer to help him with that switch. Kelly also co-directed again with Stanley Donen. "Brigadoon" (1954) Kelly and Van Johnson star in the famed musical as Americans visiting Scotland and finding a magical village there. The streaming series "Schmigadoon!" owes a lot to this. "It's Always Fair Weather" (1955) A reunion of several soldiers, one played by Kelly (also co-di- recting with Stanley Donen once more), sparks this comedy-drama fueled by musical numbers. "Invitation to the Dance" (1956) Kelly wrote, co-directed and co-starred in this unique experiment, telling several stories with no spoken dialogue ... only with dance. "Marjorie Morningstar" (1958) Kelly made a notable turn toward drama as a Catskills-resort so- cial director who becomes involved with the younger title character (played by Natalie Wood). "Inherit the Wind" (1960) A famous trial over the teaching of Darwin's theory of evolution inspired the stage play that director Stanley Kramer turned into this excellent film, with Kelly in a sterling cast that also includes Spencer Tracy and Fredric March as the opposing attorneys. "The Cheyenne Social Club" (1970) A very solid directing effort by Kelly, this unusual Western casts James Stewart as a cowboy who inherits a brothel ... with real-life friend Henry Fonda as his frontier pal. "Xanadu" (1980) In his final feature-film role, Kelly plays one of the people significantly inspired by a muse (Olivia Newton-John).
