It's Never too late to start strength training Let's face it, many of us are getting exercise by walking on a regular basis. This is a great way to re- lieve stress, be active and get your cardio workout assuming you are walking fast enough to increase your heart rate. Did you know that strength training can help build your muscle stamina and endurance and should not be overlooked as a cardio workout, especially for women. First of all, strength training will help with weight management and weight loss. Muscles are more metabolically active than fat, therefore burning more calories, even at rest. When you increase your muscle mass, you increase your caloric consumption and ultimately increase your metabolism. For those who have os- teoporosis or osteopenia, strength training should be a vital component of your exercise regime as it will help create bone density. This also includes women who have gone through menopause as there is a drop in estrogen which normally helps maintain bone density. Improving bone density will improve the health of your joints and will keep you mobile and indepen- dent, especially as we age. We all know how good we feel after we exercise, strength training is no different. The endorphins that are released during strength training are known to give us the ener- gy we need to carry us throughout the day and give us positive ener- gy. Strength training will also help reduce stress and anxiety levels and there- fore help with depres- sion. With the exertion of exercise we will sleep better at night too, plus a good night's rest will allow our muscles to recover and self repair. With technology being such a big part of your lives these days, you may already have noticed a negative change in your posture, or perhaps you've lost your balance or have taken a fall or two. Did you know that one in three adults aged 65 and older fall each year? Peo- ple who fall are 2-3 times more likely to fall again. Having good posture takes core strength, and strength training is vital as all movements begin with engaging your core mus- cles. You are probably already aware that strength training has been known to help various diseases such as heart and cardiovascular disease. Cardiovascular diseases are the number one cause of death glob- ally versus any other cause. Whether you are concerned with your high blood pressure, cholesterol levels, diabetes, obesity, risk of cancer, pain from arthri- tis, strength training is beneficial.
