Titan softball names award winners at banquet By Andy Heuring South Gibson Sports sports@sgstartimes.com Gibson Souther n's soft- ball team announced their award winners last Wednes- day at their awards ban- quet. "Looking at the whole season I believe we over- achieved and I was ver y pleased. We ended up 27-4 and were ranked as the num- ber two team in the state. At the beginning of the season I did not think we would be that successful. However, the last game of the season I think we under-achieved. I think we were a lot better than what we played. I take the responsibility for that and it still aggravates me that I did not have them bet- ter prepared for that game," said Coach Gar y May about the Lady Titans. The season included a number of school records as they went on a 21-game r un. They had three games in which they scored 10 or more r uns in the first in- ning. One game they sent 13 batters to plate before getting an out. Senior Brenna Blume had a monster year, as she set three season records. She won the award for high batting average with a school record .636; Most Hits with another single season record of 63, and Most Doubles with yet an- other single season record of 20. She also had the Most Home Runs 12, Most RBIs 52 and Most Runs Scored 49. Pitcher Alexis Tucker won Most Wins 16 and Most Strikeouts 120. Ally Malone and Laur yn Adamson tied for Most Tri- ples with two. EmmaLee Higgs won SPORTS South Gibson Star-Times Tuesday, June 21, 2022 B-1 Blackard 12th, Islam 51st at golf state finals By Andy Heuring Star-Times Sports sports@sgstartimes.com Gibson Southern freshman Peyton Blackard made and early run Wednesday morn- ing at the golf state finals and was briefly tied for the lead at -1, but it didn't last. He ran into trouble on the tough, long course to finish in 12th place, plus 5 after 36 holes. It earned him All-State honors. Titan Senior Ryan Islam shot 82 on Tuesday and fin- ished with an 80 on Wednes- day to place 51st in the state finals. "I'm super pleased with his play. For a 15-year-old to go up and play like he did is incredi- ble. I'm sure it wasn't what he wanted, but he did great," said Titan Golf Coach Matt Rein- brecht. "Ryan did well. He got some bad luck with his tee times. He had to play the brunt of the heat both days. We didn't get to finish our practice round because of weather, so he had never played the course," said Reinbrecht. Blackard started steady on Tuesday morning, making par on the first two holes. He dropped a shot on the nearly 600 yard par 5 third and anoth- er on the 400 plus par 4 ninth to shoot 38 on the front nine. He then reeled off seven straight pars before making birdie on the par 5 18th to fin- ish at plus one 73. He laid up on the hole and hit a wedge tight. "I really made some good par putts that kept my round going. On 11 made a putt 10 to 12 feet, eight footer on 16, and about 15 ft. on 17," said Blackard. "It was really good momen- tum," said Blackard of finish- ing 18 with a birdie. It put him in --- place after the first round. Wednesday morning he start with a charge. He bird- ied the first two holes, which put him into a tie Connor Mc- Neely for the lead with one under. "I wasn't really tr ying to make birdies when those two happened. I was doing a pretty good job of staying in the mo- ment. I was hitting my drives well and making pars and I Senior Titan Ryan Islam and freshman Peyton Blackard both competed at the state finals last Tuesday and Wednesday. Islam tied for 51st and Blackard tied for 12th.
