"It's a hallmark event and it's not just for people who are in the market to build or remodel," he said. "A lot of people come to see the latest in design, landscaping, color, fashions, they gather ideas and trends from the industry as a whole." Kristine Hillmer, executive director at Metropolitan Builders Association, said the annual Parade of Homes will take place Aug. 17 through Sept. 8 and will feature 17 brand-new homes build by southeastern Wisconsin's most experienced home builders in two subdivisions. "There are many reasons why people attend the parade," she said. "Some are in the market to buy a new house, some are looking for design elements and remodeling ideas to infuse into their own home and some simply like to view beautiful homes. Visitors also have the opportunity to interact with the area's top experts in the field." Hillmer said the houses featured in each parade have never been seen by the public before. "These houses are constructed with the latest in technology, standards and design elements making them the best of the best on the market today," she said. The Metropolitan Builders Association held the first Parade of Homes in 1945, making it the longest-running parade in the nation. Hillmer said this year's parade will also include exhibitor tents featuring the MBA's associate members and company representatives will be on hand to talk about their product or service. "We are celebrating our 68th parade this year," Hillmer said. "The event has been replicated in many different ways around the country since then." Hillmer said as the housing industry shows signs of a sustained recovery. Special events and promotions will be held throughout the event, including a food drive, 2-for-1 Days, Realtor Days, Chamber Days and Military Appreciation Days. Tickets for the 2013 MBA Parade of Homes are available at parade entrances for $10 for adults, and $6 for seniors 65 and over and children ages 3 through 12. Children under 3 are free. "The Parade of Homes is the perfect place to start the process," she said. "There are many parade attendees that come year after year and make it an annual must-see event." Hillmer said because the houses feature the latest in design elements and technologies, each year provides consumers with lots of great ideas to use in their next house or to update their existing home. "Different design styles, the latest technological advances, and many different floor plans are on display," she said. "Many of the homes will not be open for viewing after the parade because they are already sold or are custom built for a specific family. So, this is the only chance to see some of these masterpieces." Hillmer said it's exciting to hear the buzz from consumers as they share with each other their favorite parts of the homes. "Every year, there are little surprises that the builders put into their models and it's fun when they are discovered," she said. "The other satisfying part for us is to hear from our builders the positive comments they hear. The past five years have been particularly hard in the home building industry and hearing the great results our members are getting from their efforts is absolutely gratifying." Hillmer said planning the event is a year-long endeavor and plans are already under way to look at prospective subdivisions for the event next year. "Once we know where it will be held, all of our builder members will be given the opportunity to participate," she said.
