The television veteran aims to put a fresh face on the condition in "Dirty Little Secret," a fact- inspired Lifetime movie premiering Saturday, June 11. She plays a capable, innovative nurse whose compulsion to overcrowd her house with items causes problems for her younger daughter (Lizzie Boys), who has long altered her own life – now including her college plans – to cover for her mother's habit. "I loved the idea that it could help to give people an understanding of people they might not understand," Hart explains of doing the film. "We cover a lot of the reasons for hoarding; it can be the flip side of OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder), and there's also a very big connection between hoarding and loss. Also, people can behave very differently inside the home than they do outside. There's a lot to unwrap here." In researching her role, Hart spoke with psychologists, and she says she hopes "this movie maybe can help someone get help, or help some family members. I do know some people are borderline hoarders, but where is the line drawn? For me, is it that I have a healthy sense of what's valuable and what's not? I learned that for some people, it's that they didn't have a whole lot growing up, so they pretty much want to hold on to everything. Getting rid of something is like cutting off a limb." Working amid so many objects posed special challenges for Hart in making "Dirty Little Secret." She notes, "It was almost like doing a scene in the mud. You just got down and dirty every day. It wasn't easy to move all of it if you had to turn around and do a reverse shot. We were tripping and falling over stuff, lamps and stacks of things fell over, and it was my difficult." Though she also starred in a holiday movie for Lifetime last year, former TV "Sabrina" and "Clarissa" Hart has been spending a lot of time in the other side of the cameras as a director lately, particularly with multiple episodes of CBS' "Young Sheldon" and the Paramount+ revival of "iCarly." Also a producer of many of her projects, she says says it's "really fun" just to be an actress for hire, as she was on "Dirty Little Secret." "I've done so many of these movies where it's not really a deep dive to play the character," Hart says, "but this script gave me so information, it was super-helpful. It was something I felt I could sink my teeth into." BY JAY BOBBIN Melissa Joan Hart has a 'Dirty Little Secret' Melissa Joan Hart stars in "Dirty Little Secret," premiering Saturday on Lifetime.
