A-4 Tuesday, May 31, 2022 South Gibson Star-Times Honor Day awards Gibson Southern seniors By Janice Barniak SG Star-Times Editor editor@sgstartimes.com Gibson Southern Scholarships awarded more than $155,000 to 2022 seniors Thursday, bringing their current total awarded to $1.6 million. In addition, many scholars added university scholarships to their packages. Among those university endow- ments, Mosbah Alshwikh received full tuition to University of Evans- ville, David Levi Dickerson has full tuition to South Dakota Mines on a football scholarship, Carter Jones received full tuition to Indiana Uni- versity, and Madalynn Steckler was awarded the Lilly four-year full tu- ition scholarship to Rose Hulman along with board and a $ 900 yearly book stipend. Gibson Southern teachers be- stowed departmental honors. Mr. Mraz awarded Steckler for her Ac- ademic Superbowl work on the His- tory and English teams. In art, Laura Russell lauded the "quiet, unmatched work ethic" of Geneva Sagers, who won the senior art award as well as winning best of show in the Evansville Museum High School Art Show, which evaluates art from 17 schools. Sagers is a "great talent and al- ways willing to help," according to her teacher. Jon Adams bestowed the account- ing award on behalf of Mr. Obert. Two students, Marc Schroer and Mason Yancey had the same grade and were a joy to teach, according to Obert, and both are going to USI to study accounting. Kaden Hurless, who runs a busi- ness with his father and is known for carrying a black notebook with all his new business ideas in it, won the department's marketing award. Teacher Jared Grigsby said honors student Payton Henn, who served as editor-in-chief of the newspaper, rose above the rest in the English depart- ment. Teacher Jill Viera awarded Tay- lor Hart for her FCCL A work. Hart worked without complaint as one of the original students in the chapter. She jumped in in the classroom and took all the classes offered and was a teacher's assistant who embodied the look-ahead, plan-ahead mantra she pushes with the students. Scott Walden bestowed the lan- guage department's award to Mad- eleine Douglas, a student he said al- ways strived to learn more and ques- tion more. Carter Jones won the math award, teacher Diane Nurrenbern said, through hard work and dedication. Band Director Brent Winstead gave the John Phillip Sousa award, voted on by band students to rec- ognize achievement, interest, loyal- ty, and cooperation shown by Claire Cox. As for the music department Merit Award for outstanding contributions, that was won by Halle Humbaugh. The first chair award for contribut- ing to the excellence of ensembles went to Megan Weaver. Mraz next awarded the science department's recognition for a stu- dent who has taken on challenges and done well in them. Out of many outstanding seniors, Mraz said the award went to Kevin Baehl. "There could be no other." Adam Bledsoe presented Thespi- an of the Year to leader, head brain- stormer, and the student always ready to rally the troops onstage and backstage — Abby Scheller. Twenty-three students achieved the Governor's Work Ethic Certifi- cate program. For all scholarships awarded by Gibson Southern Schol- arships, see next week's edition. Something Newsworthy?
