Here's a selection of relevant highlights among the patriotic movies this time. "Patton" (1970; Starz Encore Action, Wednesday, May 25): Earning him an Oscar for best actor (which he very famously refused), George C. Scott found his signature role in the controversially independent- minded World War II general. "The Hurt Locker" (2008; AMC, Thursday, May 26): An Iraq War bomb-disposal unit takes big chances in the midst of combat in director Kathryn Bigelow's Oscar-winning drama; cast members include Jeremy Renner and Anthony Mackie. "From Here to Eternity" (1953; Turner Classic Movies, Saturday, May 28): The beach love scene between Burt Lancaster and Deborah Kerr is a defining image of the James Jones story about relationships at the time of the attack on Pearl Harbor. "The Great Escape" (1963; TCM, Sunday, May 29): In this all-time-great adventure movie, based on a true story, Allied prisoners plot a getaway from a World War II camp. Steve McQueen (in one of his most famous roles), James Garner, Richard Attenborough, Charles Bronson and James Coburn star. "Behind Enemy Lines" (2001; FXM, Sunday, May 29): A shot-down Navy navigator (Owen Wilson) has to rely on his commanding officer's (Gene Hackman) guidance to get out of Bosnia safely. "The Longest Day" (1962; TCM, Monday, May 30): It's almost easier to pick out which male stars aren't in the huge cast of producer Darryl F. Zanuck's D-Day drama than those who are. Those appearing range from Richard Burton and Sean Connery to Henry Fonda and John Wayne. "We Were Soldiers" (2002; EPIX, Monday, May 30):Mel Gibson plays the U.S. commander in the first major American-troop-involving fight of the Vietnam War. "Saving Private Ryan" (1998; AMC; Monday, May 30, and Tuesday, May 31): With a pulse-pounding beach-invasion opening, this World War II drama earned Steven Spielberg a directing Oscar. Tom Hanks plays the leader of a platoon assigned to find a missing soldier (Matt Damon); Tom Sizemore and Vin Diesel also star. "The Dirty Dozen" (1967; TCM, Tuesday, May 31): Director Robert Aldrich's World War II classic features Lee Marvin as a major given the task of training 12 convicts for a mission that could earn them amnesty if they succeed ... and survive. The "inmates" include John Cassavetes and Telly Savalas. "The Bridge on the River Kwai" (1957; TCM, Tuesday, May 31): The "epic" phase of director David Lean's career began with this Oscar-winning adventure of World War II prisoners forced to build the title bridge. Alec Guinness earned an Academy Award in a cast that also includes William Holden. BY JAY BOBBIN Military movies help to highlight the Memorial Day period George C. Scott stars in "Patton" Wednesday on Starz Encore Action. Candice Patton stars as Iris, wife of the titular superhero in "The Flash" Wednesday on The CW.
