Additionally, Hughes said
there are many plants that were
discovered by native tribes that hold
health benefits. Hughes said there
are more than 220 plants native to
the area. More than 125 species of
birds have been identified in the
area and there's a bird-monitoring
program, as well. The area is
identified as a Watchable Wildlife
Site because of the diversity of
animals that can be viewed.
Over the years, the Discovery
Center has planted 40 acres of oak
woodland, restored grasslands
and created more than five miles of
trails. The 488-acre area offers boat
ramps and day use picnic areas with
spectacular views of Mount Shasta
and Mount Lassen.
Each year the Discovery Center
hosts a Discovery Garden Festival
and California native plant sale.
