She said the metal could withstand
the weather and conditions better
than wood, which might grow mold
and decompose. It was also good
for the Earth, she said, because it
removed the items from the landfill.
"The weather in Red Bluff
can range from 15 degrees to 120
degrees. We like making use of
resources by using the minimum
amount of resources," Hughes said.
The mission is to promote
stewardship of the Sacramento
River watershed, which has been
identified as one of the 200 most
diverse ecosystems in the world.
According to Hughes, many children
benefit from the tours and programs
at the Discovery Center.
"We like to get kids when
they're young to learn
about the environment,"
Hughes said. "Sometimes
we make binoculars out
of two empty toilet paper
rolls. They like to look
through them and learn to
focus their eyes, which in
turn can help them focus,
maybe in school. Plus, they
are learning to reuse the
toilet paper rolls instead of
just throwing them in the
trash," she added.
Sacramento River Discovery
Center has a two-acre California
native plant garden and promotes
the use of native plants to
conserve water and restore
native ecosystems.
Hughes said they propagate
many plants. For instance tiny
strawberries grow wild in this area.
