"Is the way long? she asked. And the guide said: "Yes. And the way is hard and you will be old before you reach the end of it. But the end will be better than the beginning. But the young mother was happy, and she would not believe that anything could be better than these years. So she played with her children and gathered flowers for them along the way and bathed with them in the clear streams; and the sun shone on them and life was good, and the Young Mother said, "Noth- ing will ever be lovelier than this. Then the night came, and storms, and the path was dark and the children shook with fear and cold, and the mother drew them close and covered them with her cloak, and the children said, "Mother, we are not afraid. And the mother said, " this is better than the brightness of day, for now I have taught my children courage!" And the morning came, and there was a hill ahead, and the children grew tired as they climbed, and the mother was weary, too; but at all times she said to the children, "A little patience and we are there. " So the children climbed, and when they reached the top, they said: " Mother, we could not have done it without you!". And the mother, when she lay down that night, looked up to heaven, and said, "This is a better day than the last, for my children have learned fortitude in the face' of difficulty. Yester- day, I gave them courage. Today, I have given them strength. And the next day there came strange clouds which darkened the earth - clouds of war and hate and evil, and the children stumbled and fell. And the mother told them of God, the heavenly Father who loved them so much He gave his only Son, Jesus, that by trusting in Him, they would have eternal life. And, like their mother before them, they asked Jesus to forgive their sins and come into their hearts to be their personal Sav- ior. Then, they lifted their eyes and saw above the darkness the light of an everlasting Glory. And that night, the mother said: "This is the best day of all , for l have shown my chil- dren God" And the days went on, and the weeks and the months and the years, and the mother grew old, and now she was little and bent. But her children were tall and strong, and walked with courage and faith. And, when the way was hard, they helped their mother; and when the way was rough, they lifted her over, for to them, she was light as a feather. And then, at last, they came to a hill, and beyond they could see a shining road and a golden gate flung open wide. Then the mother said: "Now I have reached the end of my journey. And now I know that it is true: the end is better than the beginning! For my children can walk alone, and their children after them. And the children said: "you will walk with us al- ways, Mother, even when you have gone through the gates!" They stood and watched her as she went on alone. And the gates closed after her. There was the glori- ous light and the sound of beautiful, welcoming music. And they said to themselves: "We cannot see her, but she is with us still. For a mother like ours is more than a memory. She is a living presence with us always. And in the time to come we shall be together again: forever ! " The author is unknown. I'll be back in two weeks. Until then, live well my friend. A Little Parable for Mothers I hope you enjoy this story entitled, When Is Mother's Day? In 2022, Mother's Day lands on Sunday, May 8! Mother's Day celebrates motherhood and is a day to make an extra-special effort to recognize and appreciate mothers' roles in our lives. Often this day is extended to generations of mothers— grandmothers, great-grand- mothers, stepmothers—as well as to mother figures. In the United States, Mother's Day is celebrated annually on the second Sun- day in May. Although Moth- er's Day is a national holiday widely observed in the U.S., it is not a federal or public holiday (when businesses are closed). The History of Mother's Day Festivals honoring moth- ers in ancient times were often tied to gods and god- desses. The Phrygians held a festival for Cybele, the Great Mother of the Gods. The Greeks and Romans also honored the mother figure of their gods. Even today, an important festival in India, Durga-puja, honors the goddess Durga. During the Middle Ages, people would return to their home or "mother" church once a year during the middle of Lent. (Back then, children would often leave to work at the tender age of 10!) Historians theorize that it was the return to the "mother" church that led to the tradition of children get- ting the day off to visit their mother and family. In 16th-century England, this celebration became "Mothering Sunday." Chil- dren—mainly daughters who had gone to work as domes- tic servants—would be given the day off on the fourth Sun- day of Lent to return to their Let's celebrate Mother's Day mothers and home parish. The eldest son or daugh- ter would bring a "mother- ing cake," which would be cut and shared by the en- tire family. Family reunions were the order of the day, with sons and daughters as- suming all household duties and preparing a special din- ner in honor of their mother. Sometime during the day, the mother would attend special church services with her family. Mothering Sunday was also known as Refreshment Sunday; the fasting rules were relaxed for that day. (Often, the gospel for the day was about Jesus feed- ing the crowd with loaves of bread.) The traditional cake, called a Simnel cake, is a fruit cake with two layers of almond paste. The cake was made with 11 balls of marzi- pan icing on top, represent- ing the 11 disciples. (Judas is not included.) Tradition- ally, sugar violets would also be added. In the United States, three women were most instrumental in establish- ing the tradition of Mother's Day: Ann Reeves Jarvis, Julia Ward Howe, and Ann's daughter, Anna M. Jarvis. Learn more about these three great women who fought for children's welfare, health and peace. Ten ways to show love on Mother's Day 1. Offer yard and garden services. 2.
