E-1 Tuesday, March 29, 2022 South Gibson Star-Times St. James Catholic School THIRD GRADE NEWS We are happy to be back from spring break. We en- joyed a scavenger hunt on Monday over Lenten themes. We were able to participate in the scavenger hunt with our school families. We have been working on our writ- ing skills and applying ev- erything we have learned throughout the year. Life in the third grade is great. We are blessed with just over 30 days left together. FOURTH GRADE NEWS Hello from the fourth grade class at St. James School. Here we are again. We are really busy this week. We have so many things going on. First we are working on our Prayer Service for Holy Thursday. It is going to be the afternoon of Holy Thursday, which is April 14. The fifth graders are going to help us with it. Some of us will read some readings and some will dance to two songs, one is Ashes and the other is Bread Blessed and Broken. It is re- ally neat and we can't wait to do it. We get to practice with both classes tomorrow and Friday for the first time. We have a prayer service each Monday during Lent and this week we had a scavenger hunt. We got into school fam- ilies which means we have kids from all grades in differ- ent groups with a teacher as the leader. Except this time the 8th grader in each group was the leader. We were giv- en clues about something to do with Lent, Holy Week, or Easter, and then we had to go to different rooms and find the word in that room. Some of the teachers made it a lit- tle difficult to find the clue. It got all of us moving that's for sure, and we really did have a great time. It was a good way to start off the week af- ter Spring Break. We are writing an es- say about Holy Week. Re- ally it is about the Passion and death of Jesus. We get to put as much information in it that we want. We all brain stormed some ideas so that we had something to guide us in what we wanted to say. Writing an essay is a lot easi- er if you have some thoughts down on paper first. Any way some of us have three and four pages written and some have that many pages typed. A fter we are all finished, then we will get a copy of every- one's essay. We like it when we get to see and keep what everyone else has written. We are working on a pre- sentation for Social Studies class. We just love to do pre- sentations and this time we get to go online and get a few pictures if they go with the topic we are talking about. We really do like getting up in front of the class and tell- ing what our section is all about. Sister says it will make us good public speakers. Guess she is right because we like doing it. We are getting ready for the Ilearn test also. That is not as much fun as getting our presentations ready, but we will get as ready as we can. Easter is coming and that is wonderful. We get to eat candy again! It is also the time Jesus rose from the dead so we get to sing Allelu- ia at Mass again. Well, that is about all we have time for. It is time to get back to work. Thanks for listening to us and please be careful and stay healthy. Have a Blessed Easter! Take care and God bless you all. FIFTH GRADE NEWS The fifth grade at St. James School returned from Spring Break ready to conquer the last remaining weeks of the school year. It is hard to be- lieve that we only have sev- en weeks left until summer break. In math class, we have been working on order of op- erations. We have learned the correct steps in solving numeric expressions. We have begun our geometry unit this week. We will be learning all about circles and polygons. We will be able to classify triangles and special quadrilaterals. Lastly, we will be learning how to find the area of certain geometric fig- ures. In social studies, we have been learning about the American Constitution and the Bill of Rights. We have learned about the freedoms guaranteed by the Bill of Rights. We have also dis- cussed the three branches of our government and the jobs each branch performs. Over the next several weeks, we will be rehearsing for our Holy Thursday ser- vice with the fourth grade. This prayer service helps to recreate the Passion and Death of Jesus Christ during Holy Week. We have missed doing this the past few years, and we look forward to be- ing able to present this to our school and parish. We would like to wish ev- eryone a happy and fun-filled Spring. Gabriel and Elena Farone wait for the bus. Liam Tooley, Chase Naas and Dallas Ricker hang out before leaving school for the day. Here we have another group of 4th graders with some of the band members to check out their instru- ments. Tate: Fifth-grader Tate Bane reads the First Station prayer during the Stations of the Cross prayer service at St. James School. The fourth graders went to the band room to lis- ten to the band play their instruments to see if they would like to join the band. Here we have Layla Kassonbrock, Libby Baumgart, Ashley Kroft and Able Miller working on their social studies presentations. Science: St James fifth graders Aubrey Sollman, Evan Weisheit and Gabriel Faraone work on answer- ing the clues during a recent science review project. Students participated in an Escape Room game and had to break the codes to be the first to escape.
