Brainerd Dispatch • February 27 - March 5, 2022 •19 By Raye Smith TV Media WHAT'S NEW ON HULU "The Dropout" Follow along with the true story of a business venture gone wrong with "The Dropout," the new mini- series premiering Thursday, March 3, on Hulu. Based on the podcast of the same name by Emmy-winning journalist Rebecca Jarvis and ABC Audio, this biographical drama chronicles the true story of the rapid rise and fall of American biotechnology entrepreneur Elizabeth Holmes and her company Theranos. Holmes, portrayed in the series by Amanda Seyfried ("Les Misérables," 2010), dropped out of Stanford University to pursue a promising business prospect with a new and potentially revolutionary blood-testing technology. Building her company quickly, unforeseen complications with the product and Elizabeth's actions led to the fall of Theranos and a massive fraud law - suit. Created and written by Jarvis with fellow ABC news producers Taylor Dunn and Victoria Thomp- son (both of "GameStopped," 2021), "The Dropout" is directed by Michael Showalter ("Search Party"), Francesca Gregorini ("The Truth About Emanuel," 2013) and Erica Watson ("Snowpiercer"). The series also stars Anne Archer ("Fa- tal Attraction," 1987), Michaela Watkins ("Wanderlust," 2012), Naveen Andrews ("Lost"), Utkarsh Ambudkar ("Ghosts"), Michael Ironside ("Top Gun," 1986), Michel Gill ("Mr. Robot"), Laurie Metcalf ("Roseanne"), Elizabeth Marvel ("True Grit," 2010), William H. Macy ("Shameless"), Kurtwood Smith ("That '70s Show"), Sam Wa- terston ("Law & Order"), Stephen Fry ("Gosford Park," 2001) and Kevin Sussman ("Burn After Read- ing," 2008). "Fresh" (2022) Settle in for a wild dating ride with the new thriller "Fresh," stream- ing on Hulu as of Friday, March 4. Exhausted by the realities of modern dating and done with dat- ing apps, Noa (Daisy Edgar-Jones, "Normal People") is ready for her own love story. When she meets mysteriously intriguing Steve (Sebastian Stan, "Pam & Tommy") at a store, she takes a chance on love and gives him her number. Smitten with a guy who seems to be everything she wants, Noa soon finds out that her new love interest is hiding some unusual appetites. Directed by Mimi Cave ("Vessel," 2015) and written by Lauryn Kahn ("Ibiza," 2018), "Fresh" also stars Jojo T. Gibbs ("Twenties"), Andrea Bang ("Kim's Convenience"), Dayo Okeniyi ("Queenpins," 2021), Charlotte Le Bon ("The Hundred- Foot Journey," 2014) and Brett Dier ("Jane the Virgin"). WHAT'S NEW ON NETFLIX "Against the Ice" (2022) Learn the harrowing true story of Denmark's Alabama Expedition with "Against the Ice," premiering on Netflix Thursday, March 3. Based on the memoir by explorer Ejnar Mikkelsen, this historical drama follows Mikkelsen (Nikolaj Coster- Waldau, "Game of Thrones") in 1909 as he leads the expedition across Greenland's frozen land- scape with his cohort, Iver Iversen (Joe Cole, "Peaky Blinders"). Bound and determined to prove that Greenland is not two separate piec- es of land to prevent America from staking a claim on the country's North Eastern land, the pair embark upon the perilous and seemingly hopeless mission to find the proof they need to support their claims. Battling against incredible odds, the pair fight to make their way out alive. Written for the screen by Coster-Waldau and new talent Joe Derrick, "Against the Ice" is direct- ed by Peter Flinth ("Arn: The Knight Templar," 2007). Heida Reed ("Pol- dark"), Ed Speleers ("Downton Abbey"), Charles Dance ("Gosford Park," 2001), Diarmaid Murtagh ("Vikings"), Gísli Örn Gardarsson ("The Oath," 2016), Frankie Wilson ("The Souvenir," 2019), Sam Red- ford ("The Stranger"), Nick Jame- son ("Joe Dick," 2017), Thorsteinn Bachmann ("Katla") and Lin Gal- lagher ("Voodoo MacBeth," 2021) also star in the film. WHAT'S NEW ON PARAMOUNT+ "Star Trek: Picard" - Season 2 Explore strange new worlds in the final frontier when Season 2 of "Star Trek: Picard" releases on Paramount+ Thursday, March 3. Set in the year 2399, this eighth series in the expanded Star Trek Universe finds Capt. Jean-Luc Picard (Sir Patrick Stewart, "Star Trek: First Contact," 1996) retired to his fam- ily's vineyard when he is drawn into a new adventure by Data's (Brent Spiner, "Outcast") potential daugh- ter, Dahj (Isa Briones, "Lonely Boy," 2013), one of a new race of syn- thetic beings called Synths. Having fought for the Synths' right to exist during Season 1, Season 2 sees Picard return to take on his nemesis, Q (John de Lancie, "Crank: High Voltage," 2009), once again. As Q breaks time, Picard and his team, now trapped in the 21st Century, must race to save the future of the Galaxy. Created by Kirsten Beyer ("Star Trek: Discovery"), Michael Chabon ("Spider-Man 2," 2004) and Akiva Goldsman ("A Beautiful Mind," 2001), "Picard" is directed by Douglas Aarniokoski ("Criminal Minds"). Jeri Ryan ("Star Trek: Voyager"), Alison Pill ("Scott Pilgrim vs. the World," 2010), San- tiago Cabrera ("Big Little Lies"), Michelle Hurd ("Blindspot"), Harry Treadaway ("Mr. Mercedes"), Evan Evagora ("Fantasy Island," 2020), Orla Brady ("Into the Badlands") and Annie Wersching ("24") also star in the series. WHAT'S NEW ON PRIME "The Boys Presents: Diaboli- cal" - Season 1 "The Boys" are back like they've never been seen before. The new adult animated spinoff series, "The Boys Presents: Diabolical," premieres on Prime on Friday, March 4. Based on the DC Com- ics of the same by Garth Ennis ("Preacher") and Darick Robert- son, the series follows a group of superhero vigilantes as they take on super-powered individuals who abuse their unique gifts. Now, the group, comprised of Billy Butcher (Karl Urban, "Star Trek," 2009), Hughie Campbell (Jack Quaid, "The Hunger Games," 2012), Mother's Milk (Laz Alonso, "Wrath of Man," 2021), Frenchie (Tomer Capon, "Fullmoon") and Kimiko Miyashiro (Karen Fukuhara, "Suicide Squad," 2016), are being invaded by a host of new (and diabolical) storylines in their world. With stories created by Ennis, Awkwafina ("Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings," 2021), Eliot and Ilana Glazer ("Broad City"), Evan Goldberg and Seth Rogen ("Superbad," 2007), Simon Racioppa ("Spliced"), Justin Roiland ("Rick and Morty"), Ben Bayouth ("Blark and Son"), Andy Samberg ("Brooklyn Nine-Nine") and Aisha Tyler ("Archer"), this ani- mated adventure is guaranteed to be a hilariously wild ride. Samberg, Rogen, Awkwafina, Tyler, Roiland, E. Glazer and Goldberg also voice star in the series, alongside an all-star line-up that includes Antony Starr ("American Gothic"), Giancarlo Esposito ("Breaking Bad"), Kumail Nanjiani ("The Big Sick," 2017), Jason Isaacs ("Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets," 2002), Ben Schwartz ("Parks and Recreation"), Simon Pegg ("Hot Fuzz," 2007), Christian Slater ("Mr. Robot"), Michael Cera ("Superbad," 2007), Don Cheadle ("Crash," 2004), Kevin Smith ("Clerks," 1994) and Kenan Thompson ("Saturday Night Live").
