February 6 - 12, 2022 • Terre Haute Tribune-Star • 19 tastytv BY GEORGE DICKIE Roy Choi spotlights what needs fi xing in Season 2 of 'Broken Bread' The title may be "Broken Bread" but it's about so much more than food. In each episode of the series, which currently streams its second season Tuesdays on Tastemade, Los Angeles-based host, chef and restaurateur Roy Choi examines social justice issues such as gentrification, cultural erasure and the corporate takeover of food and farming through the lens of food, celebrating the people who are making big changes to the food landscape, what is eaten and where communities gather, all in an effort to raise awareness. "Our whole focus at 'Broken Bread' is finding good people doing great things against all odds," Choi explains, "and we really try to look at and empathize and be connected to the food system and what's not working within it. ... So we like to show just the strength of the human character and the people that are doing something, even without the camera or with no benefit to themselves. They're doing it because they know it's the right thing." That's evident in the Tuesday, Feb. 8, episode "Food as Resistance," which looks at the long- buried history of the Chavez Ravine neighborhoods where Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles now stands. Choi meets some of the people actively working to preserve Latinx cuisine and seeks out some of the city's top taco makers. Standing among food kiosks on a hilltop overlooking the stadium, he also discusses the cultural erasure that took place when three neighborhoods of Latinos were displaced by the venue's construction and the paradox of those who root for the Dodgers today. "How are we the biggest fans of this sport but at the same time this sport and this team were directly responsible for erasing three of the most vibrant communities of our history? ...," Choi says. "The head of the snake was Dodger Stadium because it's such an iconic place in Los Angeles. It really makes like the growth of the city and that mid-century modern architecture in the 1950s (possible)." "But also, we looked at it (through) a prism of how people are treated today," he continues. "It's kind of like when somebody wants something, it's as if no one was there before. You know, the Columbus-ing of things like, 'These people don't matter. There's no value. That land is valuable.' It doesn't matter whether or not there are communities there that have built traditions and culture and lived for generations. So we wanted to really look at that and get people to understand that this championship team comes at a cost." Other topics this season include gentrification in Los Angeles' Chinatown; the vibrant food, nightlife and cultural scenes of the oft-misunderstood Tijuana, Mexico; and the unsustainable financial model of the restaurant industry.
