But the property, known simply as The Farm, serves a monumental purpose. Once harvested, locally grown produce is added to the food supply offered to county residents in need – an effort, officials say, to help ensure low-income people have ready access to food high in nutrients. The Farm, 9000 S. 68th St., is notable for another reason. Located within Franklin, it is one of a shrinking number of plots within the county still zoned for agricultural use – a gesture that continues to symbolically represent Wisconsin's heritage. Years ago, The Farm was once an active farm. More recently, ownership was assumed by the Milwaukee County House of Correction, which has its southern detention facility directly across the street from The Farm. The county had been using the The Farm as a work-release program for inmates. But the prohibitive cost of operating the site led to a transfer of oversight several years ago.
