Lady Chargers working on being more competitive this season By Matthew Haycraft The Lady Chargers, in the 2020 -2021 regular season, fin- ished their hardwood campaign with a 4-12 overall record, includ- ing a 1-9 PAC mark. This year's campaign has already begun with the Chargers 0 -4, accord- ing to current sources. Pike Centrals girls' basketball lost two seniors from last year's roster, Kenzie Powell and Mal- lory Hickey. Powell and Hickey were both starters for three years for the Lady Chargers. Coach Kyle McCutchan said, "We are going to miss both of them for leadership, they both played varsity off and on for three years. So we're gonna miss them all around as the players, leaders, everything, they were good kids, good players for us." This year's Lady Chargers are made up of five seniors, four ju- niors, six sophomores and one freshman, leaving the girls' team with only varsity and junior var- sity this year. "They work hard, (are) coach- able, but a good group of kids. They're working at it. We picked up a couple seniors back this year, but I like where we are at. We played Reitz already and it was a competitive game. We just were a little bit young on varsity experience, but that's why we're here, to coach and keep working," commented McCutchan. He went on to say that the games seem to have a complete- ly different atmosphere than last year, they are way more live- ly. With COVID in swing last year, the games seemed more like scrimmages instead of reg- ular games. He thinks the atmo- sphere of the game being more lively is helping the girls get back into the spirit of the game. The Lady Chargers' five se- niors this year are Mallory Hunt, Kya Leighty, Kya Sullivan, Hailey Parker and Emily Delobel. Hunt stands at 5'9" and will be playing center this year. She is a senior team captain who is a very good post player with good foot- work and was the team's leading scorer and rebounder last season, according to McCutchan. Hunt said, "I think we've got a good team and will have a pret- ty good season. Hopefully, we'll have a good one from what we've had the last few years. A big goal for me is to hopefully break a re- cord. There's some high num- bers on the list, but hopefully I can get one of them. We have a good group of seniors. We have a lot more than what we've had in the past. Last year, we only had two and the year before, we had three, so we've got a bigger group of seniors and I think we do pret- ty well as a group." Leighty will be a forward for the varsity team this year. She stands at 5'9" also and is the oth- er senior captain of the team. She was the top defensive player last year and plays with a lot of ener- gy. Coach McCutchan said he is really excited to see her have a big senior season. "I feel like as a team, we get along really good and we play with effort throughout the whole game. You don't give up and we
