The se- ries will grace Apple TV+ with its final season, releasing its first three episodes on Friday, Nov. 5, with new episodes dropping weekly thereafter. The critically acclaimed pe- riod comedy wraps up its modernized interpretation of the famous poetic icon's life, whose legacy was mostly built posthumously. Exploring and extrapolat- ing what historians and liter- ary buffs know about the mys- terious poet's life in 19th-cen- tury Amherst, Mass., "Dickin- son" largely imagines what that life would have been like. The Apple Original series is just one version of events drawn from her remaining correspondences, poems, pub- lished works and contempo- rary accounts from those who knew her. In the series, Steinfeld por- trays a teenage Emily, con- sumed by her desire to simul- taneously please and rebel from her family, find love and find her place in the changing world around her. With the ex- pectations of adulthood on the horizon, Emily tries to blaze a path for herself be- yond her literal and meta- phorical housekeeping duties. The exploration of her adoles- cence in "Dickinson" rings true to the raw emotion ex- pressed in her poetry. Emily struggles to be under- stood by her family and the people in her community, but she cherishes her relationship with her brother, Austin, por- trayed by Adrian Blake Enscoe ("Seeds," 2018). That bond is tested early in the series when Emily learns that her brother is to marry her own love. It is inarguable among ex- perts that Dickinson loved her friend and sister-in-law, Sue (Ella Hunt, "Cold Feet"), but whether their relationship was romantic or simply an unusual- ly close friendship is often de- bated. In "Dickinson," their ro- mance is explicit context, not just sub-textual tension. Sue's opinion is the only one about which Emily truly cares when it comes to her writing, and the two have a fiercely intimate bond. Emily's family troubles ex- tend beyond just her brother's pending marriage. She has a complicated relationship with her father, Edward (portrayed by Toby Huss, "Halt and Catch Fire"), who has encouraged her throughout her life to be well educated and value learn- ing — he even hired a maid to give Emily more time to write — but is reluctant to support her efforts to publish her writ- ing. Her mother, exasperatedly played by Jane Krakowski ("30 Rock"), also wants Emily to consider how publishing her writing could affect her father's political aspirations. "Dickinson" takes amusing and vivid creative license with Emily's young life, including her frequent carriage rides with Death, personified as rap- per Wiz Khalifa ("Duncan- ville"), and a surreal giant bee friend, voiced by Jason Mant- zoukas ("The House," 2017), who first visits Emily in a drug- induced hallucination. These magical elements of "Dickin- son" perfectly capture the po- et's real-life wild imagination. Meanwhile, the modern lan- guage, dance and comedy that "Dickinson" pairs with the pe- riod visuals work to show just how Dickinson would have seen her world and been viewed by others in the 1800s. Series creator Alena Smith told Vanity Fair that putting a mod- ern veil over the writer's life was important in making "Dickinson" because "she wasn't fully understood in her own time … so we sort of get to try to understand her in ours." Season 2 of "Dickinson" in- troduced Ayo Edebiri ("Big Mouth") as Hattie, a maid in Sue's new marital home and a medium who sends Emily on a definite path to publish more of her poems. She is also a part of the creative circle that push- es Emily to consider whether she could become a literary ce- lebrity. With technological advance- ments in publishing and persis- tent interest in her work from newspaper editor Samuel Bowles, portrayed by Finn Jones ("Game of Thrones"), Emily is presented with an op- portunity to share her writing wider than ever before but must also face the frightening attention that comes with pub- lic acknowledgement. For real Dickinson heads, the teaser released in September dropped a hint about where "Dickinson" Season 3 would go.
