2 | 2021/2022 Guide to Giving TIPS FOR INFORMED GIVING GIVE FROM THE HEART, GIVE RESPONSIBLY Charitable giving is one of the most meaningful things a person can do. Regardless of gift size, a bit of planning ahead of time is a great idea. Follow the tips below to make sure you are giving with confidence to charities you trust. DEFINE YOUR MISSION. Consider the issues about which you are passionate. What would you like to change about our community? How would you like to make a difference? Once you have defined your charitable vision, find a nonprofit with a mission and programming that align with your core values and goals. ENSURE THE ORGANIZATION'S LEGITIMACY. Verify the organization is a reputable charity by using a third-party site that is focused on vetting nonprofits. Among many things, you will want to confirm that the organization is tax-exempt and complies with the IRS requirement that a 501(c)(3) public charity must make three years of filed Forms 990 readily available to the public. LEARN HOW YOUR GIFT WILL BE USED. Try to gain insight into the organization's financial health and budget breakdown by reviewing their Form 990. This provides an in-depth view of an organization's financial stability, leadership, and where its money goes. A responsibly run organization will be transparent and forthcoming with the public. ASSESS THE IMPACT OF THE ORGANIZATION. What measurable effect is the organization having in the community? Explore the nonprofit's own website, social media presence, and publications such as their Annual Report. Search the organization's name online. What news articles or other information can you find about the work the organization is doing. Most credible charities are happy to celebrate the impact they are having, so it should not be difficult to learn more about their work. DON'T FORGET: YOU CAN GIVE MORE THAN MONEY. Nonprofits are often looking for willing volunteers who can help with day-to-day operations or special projects. Volunteering is a win-win in that it helps organizations save money on having to hire help, while allowing you to make a difference and give back to your community through your time and talent. HAVE FUN! Studies show that giving and volunteering increase lifespan, happiness, and quality of life. People give for a variety of reasons. Whatever your reason for giving, enjoy yourself and give generously!
