Brainerd Dispatch • October 3 - 9, 2021 •19 By Raye Smith TV Media WHAT'S NEW ON DISNEY+ "Muppets Haunted Mansion" (2021) The Great Gonzo (Dave Goelz, "The Muppet Show") is a world-famous daredevil extraordinaire who has seen and tried it all. But on Friday, Oct. 8, Gonzo's limits may be tested as he tries to spend one night in the scariest place on earth: the Haunted Mansion. Based on the Haunted Mansion attraction featured at Disney Parks around the globe, this new special features Gonzo and his Muppet pals as they take on their scariest adventure yet. Featuring new songs, celebrity appearances and spooky family fun, this is a Halloween special for everyone to enjoy. Keep an eye out for Kermit the Frog (Matt Vogel, "Sesame Street), Pepe the Prawn (Bill Bar - retta, "Muppets Now"), Miss Piggy and Fozzy Bear (both voiced by Eric Jacobson, "The Muppets," 2011) as Gonzo goes paranormal. From director and writer Kirk R. Thatcher ("It's a Very Merry Mup - pet Christmas Movie," 2002) and writer Kelly Younger ("Muppets Now"), the special also features celebrity appearances from Danny Trejo ("Machete," 2010), Darren Criss ("Glee"), Craig Robinson ("Brooklyn Nine-Nine"), Chrissy Metz ("This is Us"), Alfonso Ribeiro ("The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air"), Skai Jackson ("Jessie"), Pat Sajak ("Wheel of Fortune") and Justina Machado ("Jane the Virgin"). "Under Wraps" (2021) It's time for another monster hit with the release of "Under Wraps," the new Disney Channel original movie landing on Disney+ this Fri- day, Oct. 8. This reimagining of the 1997 Disney original movie of the same name takes place a few days before Halloween when friends Gilbert (Christian J. Simon, "Sydney to the Max"), Marshall (Malachi Barton, "Stuck in the Middle") and Amy (Sophia Hammons, "The So- cial Dilemma," 2020) accidentally revive a mummy they discover in a neighbor's basement. Although ter- rified at first, they quickly discover that the mummy, whom they name Har ol d (Ph il W rig ht, " Cha rli B rea ks the Floor," 2021), is friendly and in desperate need of assistance. With a group of criminals trying to kidnap Harold, the kids have to work together to save their new friend and return him to his resting place before midnight on Hal- loween. This fun family film comes from director and writer Alex Zamm and writer William Robertson (both of "Woody Woodpecker," 2017). Karin Konoval ("The Good Doctor"), Jordan Largy ("Monster Trucks," 2016), Hannah Cheramy ("Van Helsing"), Jaime M. Callica ("Ruthless"), Michelle C. Smith ("Red Riding Hood," 2011) and Josh Zaharia ("Christmas Comes Twice," 2020) also star. WHAT'S NEW ON NETFLIX "On My Block" - Season 4 The teens return in the fourth and final season release of "On my Block," airing Monday, Oct. 4, on Netflix. Making their way through high school, four teens in the Los Angeles neighborhood of Freeridge find their lifelong relationship tested as they grow up together. Season 3 ended on a two-year time jump, with Monse (Sierra Capri, "American Skin," 2019), Cesar (Diego Tinoco, "Teen Wolf"), Ruby (Jason Genao, "Logan," 2017) and Jamal (Brett Gray, "When They See Us") finding more comfort in young adulthood. Amid heart-wrenching storylines and the forging of new identities, the friends will still do whatever it takes to stay together. This coming-of-age drama comes from creators Eddie Gonzalez and Jeremy Haft (both of "All Eyez on Me," 2017) and Lauren Lungerich ("Awkward."). Jessica Marie Garcia ("How to Get Away With Murder") and Julio Macias ("Selena: The Se- ries") also star in the series. "Scissor Seven" - Season 3 This Sunday, Oct. 3, the clumsy and bumbling quasi-assassin Seven (voiced by Ronny Chieng, "Crazy Rich Asians," 2018) returns for another adventure in Season 3 of "Scissor Seven" on Netflix. In previous seasons, Seven, having failed a crash course in professional killing, opens up a barbershop as his disguise. Between adventures in haircutting and a side hustle of as- sassin work, Seven finds himself on odd, wild and hilarious escapades. In Season 3, Seven is forced to leave town when his true identity is revealed, so he makes his way to Xuanwu to take the chief's head and keep everyone else safe. With hired assassins on his tail, Seven's adventures never stop, and this 10-episode third season is just as action-packed as its predecessors. From creator, director and writer Xiaofeng He (in his debut project), "Scissor Seven" also voice stars Jas Patrick ("Brawl Stars," 2017), Jake Green ("Kipo and the Age of Won- derbeasts") and Aleks Le ("Yasha- hime: Princess Half-Demon"). WHAT'S NEW ON PARAMOUNT+ "Madame X" Catch the Queen of Pop as she streams exclusively on Paramount+ in the new documentary "Ma- dame X," premiering Friday, Oct. 8. Madonna's prolific career has broken down barriers and inspired audiences since 1979, and now "Madame X" is giving fans an up-close and personal musical ex- perience. This concert documentary was filmed during the European leg of Madonna's "Madame X" tour in Lisbon, Portugal. Her Madame X persona is a secret agent on world- wide missions, changing her iden- tity and traveling the world with a dynamic and evolving sense of self. Her latest studio album takes on the same name, exploring both Madonna's vulnerability and fierce strength through live-recorded performances showcasing these new hits in a way that only a lucky few have been able to experience until now. As one of the most influential artists in history, a fierce businesswoman and mother of six, Madonna's life has thrived on her creativity and strength. Now audi- ences can finally get an up-close look at a slice of that hard work in action. "Madame X" is directed by Ricardo Gomes ("Mar Urbano," 2014) and SKNX ("Madonna: No Fear, Courage, Resist"). WHAT'S NEW ON PRIME "Welcome to Blumhouse: Madres" (2021) Prime's original horror anthology film series "Welcome to the Blum- house" returns this Friday, Oct. 8, with "Madres." Set in the 1970s, "Madres" follows a young Mexi- can-American couple, Beto (Tenoch Huerta, "Narcos: Mexico") and Diana (Ariana Guerra, "Helstrom"), who are pregnant with their first child. The couple moves to a small migrant farming community in California, but as Diana's due date looms closer, she begins experienc- ing strange symptoms accompa- nied by terrifying visions. Together, Beto and Diana work together to discover if these occurrences are the result of a legendary curse or something more sinister. One of the two latest stories in the anthology series, "Madres" is directed by Ryan Zaragoza ("All American") and written by Mario Miscione ("The Vault") and Marcella Ochoa ("Discarnate," 2018). The film's cast is rounded out by Elpidia Carrillo ("Predator," 1987), Kerry Cahill ("The Walking Dead"), Jennifer Patino ("Jumanji: The Next Level," 2019), Britton Webb ("Blood Country," 2017), Ashleigh Lewis ("Bastard's Crossing," 2021), Ev- elyn Gonzalez ("The Conners") and René Mena ("Bright," 2017). WHAT'S NEW ON SHUDDER "V/H/S/94" (2021) The V/H/S series of horror films returns with the newest addition, "V/H/S/94," premiering on Shud- der on Wednesday, Oct. 6. Known for using the found footage style of storytelling, this new installa- tion tells another chilling tale via the unsettling method. While a police S.W.A.T. team investigates a mysterious VHS tape, they discover the existence of a sinister cult, more eerie recorded footage and indications pointing to a terrifying conspiracy. This newest story in the anthological film series combines the directing and writing talents of Simon Barrett ("V/H/S/2," 2013), Chloe Okuno ("The Dotcoms," 2014), Ryan Prows ("Lowlife," 2017), Jennifer Reeder ("Knives and Skin," 2019) and Timo Tjah- janto ("Killers," 2014) alongside the writing talents of "The Night House's" (2020) David Bruckner. Anna Hopkins ("The Expanse"), Dru Viergever ("The Shape of Water," 2017), Dax Ravina ("She Never Died," 2019), Christian Lloyd ("American Gods"), Kimmy Choi ("Share," 2019), Slavic Rogozine ("Taken"), Thiago Dos Santos ("It Chapter Two," 2019), Kevin P. Gabel ("Passionflower," 2011), William Jordan ("The Midnight Man," 2016) and Daniel Williston ("Mur- der on Maple Drive," 2021) star in the film.
