What would you do with that power? j e r s e y s h o r e • s p r i n g 2 0 1 3 Children Of The Sky 42 The Odyssey of Álvar Nuñez Cabeza de Vaca Based on true events, Gordon Hesse, author of All Summer Long - Tales and Lore of Lifeguarding on the Atlantic, combines a little-known historical event and adventure saga of one of the earliest explorers of North America. continued from page 66 told at Gifted Sara. And dear God, how many nights spent eating cheese fries at all hours? Post-college, the world of oceanfront bars and nightclubs beckons with its siren song of seemingly never-ending youth. It is the 90s and there is Oasis at the Stone Pony and Jeff Buckley at the Tradewinds. These bands are kind enough to come to me on their club tours simply because I live on the ocean. And, of course, the unholy Trinity of Donovan's, Ichabod's, and The Good Side in Sea Bright. My first non-college apartment is naturally in a beach club. It's a cheap winter rental, and we're on the top floor. We have a deck from which we view the mad and lonely winter ocean set against the "Shining-like" backdrop of boarded up summer fun. As my professional life takes over, I encounter the sad reality of no more summers off. I grow paler and start to see a colorist for blonde streaks. But the ocean still reaches out to me. It spreads its long fingers into tributaries that snake to me, and I live for many years on the banks of a river in a dilapidated old Victorian with a plethora of roommates. Now I have come full circle. I live less than a mile from a bay in a waterfront town. I have my summers off again. But it is not the carefree summer of a ten-year old, the romantic summer of a teenager, or the restless summer of a young adult. Now I am the woman bobbing like a buoy as I watch my children take flight from the diving board. They are in constant sun-kissed motion, and I will change them into cozy sweatshirts as the sun dips into a seemingly endless stretch of twilight. My husband will grill dinner and bring it to me on a surfboard platter as I sit at the waters edge and sip wine. I will look out at the ocean I have looked at nearly all of my life, and I will know where I am. ◆ THE PURR'N POOCH FOUNDATION FOR ANIMALS IS DEDICATED TO PROVIDING FINANCIAL SUPPORT AND EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES TO NON-PROFIT, NO-KILL ANIMAL RESCUE GROUPS AND ORGANIZATIONS.
