JOE ORIGINS" (Oct. 19) (UPCOMING RELEASES) "Clarice" "HALLOWEEN" The title occasion still may be a month away, but particularly for horror fans, there's never a wrong time for director John Carpenter's original 1978 classic – now available on 4K Ultra HD in a Collector's Edition, as are its four sequels – that did much for the independent-film business while raising the hairs on many a viewer's head with its minimalist chills. Jamie Lee Curtis became the genre's "scream queen" as Laurie Strode, the babysitter subjected to a night of terror by the masked and murderous Michael Myers (Nick Castle), the fugitive determined to repeat his homicidal history in Haddonfield, Ill. Many of the special features from earlier video releases of the movie carry over here, including audio commentaries by Carpenter (who also composed the memorably haunting music) and Curtis; Donald Pleasence plays Michael's pursuing psychiatrist, and P.J. Soles and a very young Kyle Richards also are featured. ››› (R: AS, N, P, V) "BLITHE SPIRIT" A notable cast gives new screen life to Noel Coward's long-popular play in this adaptation, with Dan Stevens ("Downton Abbey") as a crime novelist trying to make the leap into writing screenplays. With his Hollywood-craving wife (Isla Fisher) worried about the problems he's running into in accomplishing his work, he hires a mystic (Judi Dench) to help by staging a seance ... which conjures up the spirit of his first wife and creative muse (Leslie Mann), who isn't pleased to discover that her husband now has another spouse. That prompts a somewhat surreal battle of their wives, as their mutual mate wonders what his next move should be. Though modern special effects are employed here, the cast is the thing, as it always is with this piece; Emilia Fox, James Fleet ("Four Weddings and a Funeral") and Michele Dotrice also are among the cast members. ››› (PG-13: AS) (Also on Blu-ray, Digital and On Demand) "TWIST" Superb dual Oscar winner Michael Caine is still very much in the acting game, as proven by his appearance in this updated variation of the Charles Dickens classic "Oliver Twist." He plays the influential, larcenous Fagin to this version's Twist (Raff Law), a modern British graffiti artist who's at loose ends after suffering a devastating personal loss. Falling under Fagin's patronage – and falling for another of the ringleader's disciples (Sophie Simnett) – Twist is lured into an art heist that goes awry, making him the man in the middle of opposing sides. Lena Headey ("Game of Thrones"), Rita Ora and (in one of his last projects before he began making headlines for other reasons) "Bulletproof's" Noel Clarke also star. DVD extra: "making- of" documentary. ››› (R: AS, P, V) (Also on Blu-ray, Digital and On Demand) "THE BOSS BABY: BACK IN BUSINESS – SEASONS 3 & 4" Though a movie sequel was released only recently, the original animated film first yielded this Netflix series that carries events from the first movie forward. In this collection that offers 23 episodes, JP Karliak succeeds Alec Baldwin as the voice of title character Ted Templeton Jr., who starts this set by losing his job – and then conspires with other infants to get it back. His former colleagues, meanwhile, are subjected to an ever-changing sequence of new bosses that leaves the company in relative disarray. Dan Bakkedahl ("Life in Pieces"), Bridget Everett and "Saturday Night Live" alum Cheri Oteri are among the guest voices here. ››› (Not rated: AS) "THE FOREVER PURGE" The fifth of the "Purge" suspense tales took an extra year to be released because of the coronavirus pandemic, but it makes up for lost time by immediately reinstituting the often lethal ritual of crime-committing without consequence. The catch this time, as the title infers, is that a group continues the Purge even after its supposedly limited yearly time frame expires ... earning it the name "The Ever After Purge." Josh Lucas, Cassidy Freeman and Leven Rambin play relatives trying to survive the ongoing onslaught, with Ana de la Reguera and Tenoch Huerta as married migrant workers who also find themselves pitted against renegade Purgers. James DeMonaco, who wrote all of the preceding "Purge" movies, did the same for this one. Will Patton, Zahn McClarnon (of the streaming series "Reservation Dogs") and Susie Abromeit also appear. ››› DVD extras: two "making-of" documentaries; theatrical trailer; outtakes; alternate storyboard opening. (R: AS, P, GV) (Also on Blu-ray, 4K Ultra HD, Digital and On Demand) "The Forever Purge" "I realized that I hadn't been paying attention as much as I should have to this country, which has given me so many opportunities – and the more I looked around, the more causes there were that I wanted to get involved in. It was a journey." – Piper Perabo of "The Big Leap" on Fox " b m to h o m m I It P o "As I started to grow in my career, I thought it was really important to be able to help people, especially with that first year of college and the things it takes to actually be there.
