Your community resource connection Linking Seniors with Services SENIOR NETWORK SERVICES providing services for 47 years - WE LISTEN! WE HELP! 831-462-1433 www.seniornetworkservices.org 1777-A Capitola Road, Santa Cruz, CA 95062 A nonprofit community agency • Information & Assistance • Home Help & Respite Registry • Family Caregiver Support • Shared Housing • Care Management • Money Management • HICAP- Medicare Assistance National Non-Profit Day Second Harvest Food Bank returns with its 20th annual Santa Cruz Chefs' Dinner on Sept. 9. This signature event supports the food bank's Food For Children Program, providing healthy food for children, their families and others in our county. The demonstrable bene- fit to children is knowing they cannot participate fully in school and other life activities if they are hungry. The program puts produce and pantry items directly into the hands of families so they can create the nourishing meals needed to actively participate in life. Six of Santa Cruz County's top chefs work together with a team of volunteers, will bring a multi-course feast to attendees, raising funds to support the food bank's child-focused program. "Our restauranteurs and their staffs were financial- ly hurt by closures and shelter-in-place rules." explains Suzanne Willis, Second Harvest's chief development officer. "We needed to support them, as they've supported us over the years. This year for the first time, the food bank is covering event food costs, which will affect the event's income. But our amazing sponsors have really stepped in to ensure the maximum benefit comes to our program" Sparking the Chef's Dinner idea 20 years ago, Steve Wilson of Cafe Cruz, acts as the Chef's team anchor, helping guide the amazing cooking from our coun- ty's professional culinary artists. Steve's experience and love of cooking orig- inated in Pennsylvania, Monterey and Santa Cruz establishments where he worked his way up in the culinary world. Steve is continuing his tradition of creating fun and memora- ble dining experiences at Cafe Cruz. "We've done well and want to give back to our community," Steve explains. "Some people can afford good food (but) everyone should have the ability to eat well. Our local wineries have always offered great (event) sup- port," He adds. The 2021 Chef's Dinner team, in addition to Steve Wilson, includes: Brad Briske – HOME (back again for another performance) T. Ella King - Ella's at the Airport (back again for the 3rd year) Anthony Kresge - Reef Dog Deli (back again for his fifth year) James Manss - Venus Spirits (first time Chefs' participant) Damani Thomas - Oswald (one of the most consistent- ly supportive event chefs, back this year) What The Chef's Are Saying "This event allows us (the chefs) to come together and create incredible dishes. This not only reflects our individual styles, but gives the diner dishes they might not eat in our establish- ments. It's a special event, through our passions and profession, we get a chance to contribute to families in need of comfort at their dinner table...that gratitude alone keeps me coming back year after year."Chef Anthony Kresge - Reef Dog Deli "I'm honored to have been asked to participate this year. As a chef that was born and raised in this Santa Cruz County's Chefs - Cooking for Healthier Children by Second Harvest Food Bank For nearly 30 years, the Santa Cruz County Parkinson's Group has been the center of social and educational programs locally for those living with Parkinson's Disease, their families and care partners.A vibrant community providing support and activities, our all-volunteer organization offers: • Monthly educational meetings featuring presentations related to living with and understanding Parkinson's. Meetings provide the opportunity to socialize, and share information and life experiences. • Tremolos singing group which provides voice strengthening tailored for those with Parkinson's. • Peer-support groups for those with Parkinson's. • Peer-support groups and activities for Care Partners. • Information about community-based exercise programs and classes tailored to those with Parkinson's. • Monthly Movers & Shakers newsletter which includes times and locations of activities, and articles about Parkinson's. EASE PD: Exercise Activities Support Education In 2015, the PD community formed its own 501(c)3 not-for-profit called EASE PD to further strengthen our PD community. Then, in 2018, the Santa Cruz County Parkinson's Group and EASE PD merged, to better support People with Parkinson's (PwP) in Santa Cruz County. Living well with Parkinson's means being informed and engaged with others. Joining this community is a great way to start! New to Parkinson's? James Manss - Venus Spirits 'It goes without saying that Second Harvest is paying it forward with their giving of time, energy and dedication to service. That is why I believe we "food folks" pair so well with this effort - the restaurant indus- try's backbone is to serve, give and fill others with the gift of sustenance. We're all here to help one another along. That is why we do what we do." T. Ella King – Ella's at the Airport The Food for Children Program – By the Num- bers Currently, reporting by participating agencies shows that some Food For Children distribution sites had to close during the pandemic. Others convert- ed to drive-thru, minimal contact food distributions of produce and staples bags. Additionally, the program is providing food via the mass, emergency food distribution events at the fairgrounds and boardwalk. Approximate- ly 10,000 more people monthly are now access- ing this distributed food. Another reason strong food bank fund-raising must be sustained. The event sold out quick- ly, surprising everyone. But community members can still support this award-winning program, and know that every dollar donated to Food For Chil- dren will be matched by a generous donor through September 2021.
