Brainerd Dispatch • June 13 - 19, 2021 •19 By Raye Smith TV Media WHAT'S NEW ON NETFLIX "Fatherhood" (2021) Get a dose of fatherly love with the inspiring true story "Fatherhood," coming to Netflix on Friday, June 18, just in time for Father's Day. Based on the book "Two Kisses for Mad - dy: A Memoir of Loss and Love" by Matthew Logelin, "Fatherhood" is the story of a widowed father's perseverance. Matt, played by Kevin Hart ("Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle," 2017), has just celebrated the birth of his daughter when his wife dies unexpectedly. Grieving and overwhelmed, Matt gets a crash course in parenting while trying to raise his daughter on his own. Originally produced by Columbia Pictures and also taken on by Higher Ground Productions, a company founded by the former president and first lady of the United States, Barack and Michelle Obama, "Fatherhood" was direct - ed by Paul Weitz ("About a Boy") and written by Weitz and Dana Stevens ("Safe Haven," 2013). Star- ring alongside Hart in the film are Melody Hurd ("Battle at Big Rock," 2019), Julian Casey ("Arrival," 2016), Holly Gauthier-Frankel ("On the Basis of Sex," 2018), DeWanda Wise ("She's Gotta Have It"), Ra - chel Mutombo ("The Bold Type"), Lil Rel Howery ("Bird Box," 2018), Achilles Montes-Vamvas ("This Life"), Paul Reiser ("Mad About You"), Alfre Woodard ("12 Years a Slave," 2013), Deborah Ayorinde ("Luke Cage"), Anthony Carrigan ("Gotham") and Mylène Dihn- Robic ("Chaos Walking," 2021). WHAT'S NEW ON APPLE TV+ "Physical" - Season 1 Get physical with the freshman debut of "Physical," a new series releasing on Apple TV+ on Friday, June 18. The Apple dramedy takes place in the 1980s when a tortured housewife named Sheila, played by Rose Byrne ("Bridesmaids," 2011), struggles through her existence to find a new lease on life and a path to power through aerobics. The funny and drama-packed new series will also feature Rory Scovel ("Superstore") as Sheila's husband, Danny, Deidre Friel ("New Amsterdam") as Greta, Paul Sparks ("House of Cards") as John Breem, and Ian Ousley ("13 Reasons Why") as Zeke Breem. From ITV Studios, "Physical" is directed by Craig Gillespie ("I, Tonya," 2017), Stephanie Laing ("The Crying Room") and Liza Johnson in her directorial debut. WHAT'S NEW ON PRIME "Chivas: El Rebaño Sagrado" - Season 1 Hop on the bandwagon for "Chi- vas: El Rebaño Sagrado" when it streams Friday, June 18, on Prime. A four-part docuseries, "Chivas" follows the Mexican professional soccer team, Chivas de Guadala- jara, in their latest season as they try to rebound their reputation after five consecutive losing seasons. The team, which prides itself on being a homegrown club, is the only Mexican team not to allow international players into their ranks. After the club's "dark era" from 2011 to 2015, a smudge on its esteemed 115-year history, the Chivas have slowly been building their way back to victory. Get an up-close-and-personal look into the club and its players, with never- before-seen moments behind the scenes. Featured in the series are some of the club's key members and biggest personalities, including players such as José Juan Macías, Gilberto "Tiba" Sepúlveda, Antonio "Pollo" Briseño, and Cristian "Chi- cote" Calderón, former team man- ager Fernando Tena, team sports director Ricardo Peláez and club president Amaury Vergara. With the team back on the rise, every match is a hard-fought battle, making this series one not to miss. WHAT'S NEW ON DISNEY+ "Luca" (2021) Dive in for some fun with "Luca," premiering on Disney+ this Friday, June 18. Set in the Italian Riviera, this computer-animated flick from Pixar Animation follows friendly sea monster Luca (Jacob Tremblay, "Room," 2015) as he and his friend, Alberto (Jack Dylan Grazer, "It" 2017), leave the ocean to go explore the human world. While there, they end up on a series of adventures, get used to the nov- elty of having legs and strike up a friendship with Giulia (Emma Berman, "Go! Go! Corey Carson"), a girl from the human world. This heartwarming film packs in all the family fun that can be expected from a Pixar film, telling a classic fish-out-of-water story (literally) in a fun new way. Written by Jesse Andrews ("Every Day," 2018) and Mike Jones ("Soul," 2020), "Luca" is directed by Enrico Cararosa ("La Luna," 2011), who has worked on Pixar films across a wide variety of departments during his career. The film also features the voices of com- edy greats Maya Rudolph ("Satur- day Night Live") and Jim Gaffigan ("The Jim Gaffigan Show"), as well as Giacomo Gianiotti ("Grey's Anatomy"), Deyvi Stib Rodriguez ("Good Boys," 2019), Marco Bar- ricelli ("The Book of Daniel," 2006) and Saverio Raimondo ("Dov'è Mario?"). "Dino Ranch" - Season 1 Giddy up, partners, because the hit preschool show "Dino Ranch" is stomping its way onto Disney+ on Friday, June 18. The series follows the Cassidy family as cowboys Jon (Tyler James Nathan, "Max and Ruby") and Min (Ava Ro, "Big Top Academy") travel to lands where modern-day dinosaurs roam and go on mischievous, action-packed adventures in this hit animated series. Ranked the No. 1 cable show for kids in the U.S. (per Boat Rocker Media), families can now enjoy all the fun and excitement that this series brings in one place on Disney+. Created by Matthew Fernandes ("Kingdom Force") and Boat Rocker Media, who has given families shows such as "The Next Step," "Love Monster" and "King- dom Force," the series was written by Rodey Gozum ("Miss Persona"), Naomi Jardine ("Zerby Derby") and Tom Berger ("PAW Patrol"). Also lending their voices to the series are Scott Gorman ("Kody Kapow") as Bo, Jonah Wineberg ("Bakugan: Battle Planet") as Ike Tinhorn, and Joshua Graham ("Go, Dog, Go") as Blitz. WHAT'S NEW ON HULU "Rurangi" - Season 1 Don't miss Season 1 of "Rurangi," the new drama series from New Zealand, when it comes to North American audiences via Hulu on Monday, June 14. Caz, a trans man played by Elz Carrad in his screen debut, hasn't been back to his hometown in 10 years and hasn't spoken to his father since before his transition. Now, he's return- ing to the rural dairy community for the first time in a decade to try to reconnect with his father. An emotional story about shame, love and growth, "Rurangi" has been a smash hit with audiences in New Zealand. Created by Oliver Page ("We Talk About Loss," 2011), trans-activist Cole Meyers ("Short- land Street") serves as the series writer and co-producer, while Max Currie directs. Arlo Green ("Short- land Street"), Awhina-Rose Ashby ("Waru," 2017), Kirk Torrance ("Outrageous Fortune"), Aroha Rawson ("Same but Different: A True New Zealand Love Story," 2019), Renee Sheridan ("Eternity," 2012) and Ross Harper ("House- bound," 2014) also star. "The Obituary of Tunde John- son" (2019) Experience the powerful film "The Obituary of Tunde Johnson" when is airs on Hulu on Tuesday, June 15. Originally premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2019, "The Obituary of Tunde Johnson" stars Steven Silver ("13 Reason Why") as Tunde Johnson, a gay, Nigerian-American teenager who was raised to value his life above all else when faced with the police. When Tunde is fatally shot by a police officer in a racially motivated incident, he is forced to relive the day leading up to his murder in a time loop. Written by Stanley Kalu ("O-Block," 2018) and directed by Ali LeRoi ("Everybody Hates Chris"), this film stars Spencer Nev- ille ("Days of Our Lives"), Nicola Peltz ("The Last Airbender," 2010), David James Elliott ("JAG"), Joey Pollari ("Love, Simon," 2018), Ales- sandra Rosaldo ("Instructions Not Included," 2013) and Sammi Rotibi ("Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice," 2016). WHAT'S NEW ON DISCOVERY+ "Battle of the Brothers" - Sea- son 1 Join the sibling rivalry with Brian and Michael Voltaggio in "Battle of the Brothers," the new cooking competition series coming to dis- covery+ on Thursday, June 17. Fea- turing eight promising young chefs, contestants on the show will battle it out for the chance at a guest-chef feature at one of the Voltaggios' restaurants. Week after week, the chefs are put through their paces to see who has the chops to make it in the restaurant industry — Brian and Michael themselves are also featured going head-to-head in their own sets of challenges. Don't miss the premiere of this action- packed new competition, and find out which chef has what it takes to win it all. WHAT'S NEW ON SHUDDER "Superdeep" (2020) Sci-fi and horror fans rejoice, be- cause the Russian creature feature "Superdeep" is set to release on Shudder this Thursday, June 17. The thriller is set at the Kola borehole, a secret Russian facility, after mysterious, unexplainable screaming sounds were recorded seven miles below the Earth's surface in 1984. Following these unexplained events, the borehole was closed, but now a team of sci- entists and military personnel are going below the Earth's surface to find out what exactly it was that they heard. What they uncover, however, poses the biggest threat humanity has ever seen. From director and writer Arseny Syuhin ("Stalingrad," 2014), this foreign horror film stars Milena Radulovic ("Pet"), Sergey Ivanyuk ("Rikosh- et"), Viktor Nizovoy ("Vne Igry"), Nikolay Kovbas ("Ch/b," 2014), Vadim Demchog ("Worm," 2006), Kirill Kovbas ("Stealth," 2020) and Nikita Dyuvbanov ("Dance to Death," 2017).
