Brainerd Dispatch • May 23 - 29, 2021 •19 By Raye Smith TV Media WHAT'S NEW ON DISNEY+ "Cruella" (2021) "Brilliant, bad ... and a little bit mad" — at least that's what Emma Stone ("La La Land," 2016) says when she stars as Cruella de Vil in "Cruella," airing in select theaters and on Disney+ on Friday, May 28. Disney's new live-action prequel to the animated Disney classic "One Hundred and One Dalmatians" (1961) is set in 1970s London during the punk-rock revolution. The story follows Es - tella, a young, clever and creative orphan-turned-criminal who's determined to make a name for herself and the two young thieves she's befriended, Horace (Paul Walter Hauser, "I, Tonya," 2017) and Jasper (Joel Fry, "Yesterday," 2019). Using her talent for design, Estella catches the eye of the terrifyingly chic fashion legend Baroness von Hellman, played by Oscar-winning actor Emma Thompson ("Sense and Sensibil - ity," 1995). Estella, now going by the alias Cruella, works her way up through the world of the rich and famous, her relationship with Baroness von Hellman setting into motion a series of events that have Cruella embracing her wicked side. This dark comedy comes from director Craig Gillespie ("I, Tonya," 2017) with a screenplay by Dana Fox and Tony McNamara and is derived from a story by Aline Brosh McKenna, Kelly Marcel and Steve Zissis. Stone, alongside playing the title character in the film, is an ex - ecutive producer with Glenn Close, who played Cruella de Vil in the live-action remake "101 Dalma- tians" (1996) and its 2000 sequel, "102 Dalmatians". The film also features Mark Strong ("1917," 2019), Kirby Howell-Baptiste ("Barry") and Emily Beecham ("Daphne," 2017) in supporting roles. "Launchpad" Get ready to feel the magic with "Disney's Launchpad," an anthol- ogy of short films set to release on Disney+ on Friday, May 28. "Disney's Launchpad" program selects filmmakers from under- represented backgrounds and gives them the opportunity to share their stories and visions. The program's debut season, featuring six short films all centering around the theme "Discover," shares the diverse stories of the creators be- hind them. The first story featured is "American Eid," written and directed by Aqsa Altaf, followed by "Dinner is Served," directed by Hao Zheng and written by Zheng and G. Wilson. Episode 3, "Grow- ing Fangs," is written and directed by Ann Marie Pace, while the final three shorts in the series are "The Last of the Chupacabras," written and directed by Jessica Mendez Siqueiros, "Let's be Tigers," writ- ten and directed by Stefanie Abel Horowitz, and "The Little Prince(ss)," written and directed by Moxie Peng. Each short film tells a powerful story of discovery and gives voice to tales that are commonly underrepresented by the mainstream media. The program is already planning for its second season, with the theme "Connection," and will be accept- ing applications from May 10 to June 11, 2021. WHAT'S NEW ON PRIME "Parot" Go along for the ride with "Parot," a brand new Prime-exclusive series from Spain, available to stream on Prime beginning Friday, May 28. This 10-episode crime thriller follows police inspector Isabel Mora (Adriana Ugarte, "Ju- lieta," 2016) as she investigates a series of targeted murders. After the Parot Doctrine, a law requir- ing prisoners to serve their full sentences, is overturned by the Spanish Supreme Court in 2013, a serial killer begins murdering prisoners who became eligible for release after the court ruling. Agent Mora takes on the case and ends up on a chilling mission to catch the killer and save as many lives as she can. Created by Pilar Nadal and directed by Rafa Montesinos and Gustavo Ron, the series is a drama-packed hunt for justice. Starring alongside Ugarte are Javier Albalá ("Actriz," 2017), Ivan Massagué ("Pan's Labyrinth," 2006), Blanca Portillo ("Broken Embraces," 2009), Patricia Vico ("Anna Karenina," 2013), Anto- nio Dechent ("Smoking Room," 2002), Michel Brown ("The But- terfly," 2011), Nicole Wallace ("Skam España"), Markos Marín ("The Barrier"), Rodrigo Poisón ("Unknown Origins," 2020), Nacho Fresneda ("The Ministry of Time") and Max Marieges ("The Candidate," 2018). WHAT'S NEW ON HULU "Madagascar: A Little Wild" Prepare to get out there with the hit children's spinoff series, "Madagascar: A Little Wild," when Season 3 releases on Hulu on Thursday, May 27. Catch up with the crew from "Madagascar" (2005) in this computer-animated prequel series from DreamWorks Animation Television. Starring Alex the lion (Tucker Chandler, "Still- water"), Gloria the hippo (Shaylin Becton, "Strive," 2019), Marty the zebra (Amir O'Neil, "Marlon") and Melman the giraffe (Luke Lowe, "Big City Greens"), the first two seasons take viewers along with the gang as they go on adventures as young animals growing up in the rescue center at the Central Park Zoo in New York City. Each six-episode season is jam-packed with fun and life lessons about teamwork, perseverance and friendship, and Season 3 is bring- ing back more of the same heart- warming family content. WHAT'S NEW ON NETFLIX "Lucifer" Season 5: Part 2 Don't miss the second half of Season 5 of "Lucifer," releasing on Netflix on Friday, May 28. With the first half of the fifth season having released in August 2020, fans have been impatiently await- ing the remaining eight episodes. Based on the DC Comics character created by Neil Gaiman, Sam Keith and Mike Dringenberg, "Lucifer" focuses on Lucifer Morningstar (Tom Ellis, "Miranda"), the devil, after he decides to leave hell and spend some time on Earth to bet- ter understand human kind. Taking up residence in Los Angeles, where he runs a nightclub and becomes a consultant for the LAPD, the story follows Lucifer as he encounters new and old acquaintances — human and otherwise — and works to keep Los Angeles safe while dealing with love, crime and celestial beings. Netflix has already renewed the series for its sixth and final season, scheduled to air later in 2021. "Master of None" Season 3 Jump back into "Master of None" when it returns to Netflix for a new season on Sunday, May 23. The series, which took a four- year break after airing its first two seasons, is finally returning to the streaming service with Season 3. The show has taken fans around the globe, as Season 1 of the series focused on Dev (Aziz Ansari, "Parks and Recre- ation") and his friends, Arnold (Eric Wareheim, "Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job!"), Denise (Lena Waithe, "Dear White People") and Brian (Kelvin Yu, "Bob's Burgers"), as they went through life as young people liv- ing in New York City and explored the difficulty of building careers and relationships, while Season 2 followed Dev on a soul-searching trip to Italy. Now, Season 3, titled "Moments in Love," is pivoting to focus Denise's character and her relationship with her partner, Alicia, played by BAFTA-winning actor Naomi Acki ("The End of the F***ing World," 2017). Written by Ansari and Waithe, who also penned the first two seasons, this new five-episode third season is just as smart and hilarious as its predecessors.
