Brainerd Dispatch • May 2 - 8, 2021 •19 By Dana Simpson TV Media WHAT'S NEW ON APPLE TV+ "Ghostwriter" Season 2 Get your (virtual) library passes out and get ready to hit the books because Season 2 of "Ghostwriter" is coming to Apple TV+ on Friday, May 7. A fun new take on the original '90s series of the same name, the current "Ghostwriter" fol- lows a group of four young and eager students — Reuben (Isaac Arellanes, "Euphoria"), Chevon (Amadi Chapata, "Made in Hol- lywood"), Donna (Hannah Levin- son, "Clifford the Big Red Dog") and Curtis (new actor Justin San- chez) — as they repeatedly set themselves on the case of help- ing various ghosts to find peace by leading them in their quest to accomplish their unfinished business (whatever that may be). The kicker here is that each of the ghosts manifests himself or herself inside the same local bookstore, and each of the spirits presented belongs to an accom- plished, deceased (obviously) writer. Tackling stories based on the work of Mary Shelley ("Frankenstein"), Lewis Carroll ("Alice Through the Looking- Glass"), Rudyard Kipling ("The Jungle Book") and many more within the first season, "Ghost- writers" Season 2 consists of another 13 25-minute episodes. The live-action, family-friendly series hails from producer Sari Friedland ("Enemy," 2013) and also stars popular character actor Jay Santiago ("Black Mon- day"), Nicola Correia-Damude ("Burden of Truth") and Michael Brown ("Grand Army") in recur- ring roles. The show's popular first season is already available to stream on Apple TV+. WHAT'S NEW ON HULU "Shrill" Season 3 Back for one last time (and louder than ever), Hulu is finally launching the much-anticipated third and final season of its hit half-hour comedy series "Shrill." Dropping on the streamer Friday, May 7, the series follows a young woman named Annie (Aidy Bry- ant, "Saturday Night Live"), who is in the midst of dealing with all the ups and downs of her life. Constantly caught between her quirky, boisterous, fun-loving personality and her desire to be taken seriously in her job and as a woman, Annie sets out on a quest to improve herself and change her life without having to change her notably curvy stature to suit the needs of oth- ers. Confident that she doesn't need to be a size zero in order to make her dreams come true, Annie addresses all manner of issues in her life, from pregnancy scares and relationship drama to the perpetually waxing and waning connections with fam- ily and friends. With her mom, Vera (Julia Sweeny, "Work In Progress"), and her best friend, Fran (Lola Adefope, "The Spy Who Dumped Me," 2018), by her side as always, Annie is dealing with a whole new set of issues that come with her new- and-improved self this season. Eight episodes long, Season 3 comes hot on the heels of An- nie's breakup at the end of the second season. Riding the high that only freedom and making the right choices can bring, An- nie navigates her new sex life, solo living and all manner of new experiences (such as driving an ATV, for example). Taking place in a visibly COVID-free world, "Shrill's" final season wrapped filming under safety precautions in Portland, Oregon, during fall 2020. Created by Bryant and her cohorts Alexandra Rushfield ("Friends From College") and Lindy West ("Thin Skin," 2019), "Shrill" also stars Luka Jones ("Her," 2013), John Cameron Mitchell ("Girls"), Ian Owens ("Oasis") and Patti Harrison ("A Simple Favor," 2018). WHAT'S NEW ON NETFLIX "Jupiter's Legacy" Take the world by storm with the new live-action fantasy series "Jupiter's Legacy," coming to Netflix on Friday, May 7. Born into the family business of sav- ing the world and having spent a few decades watching their parents in action, a new genera- tion of superheroes is about to take over. After 90 years of fight- ing for their country and their people, the first generation of heroes has done everything they possibly can to protect and train their children to do the same. The only problem is that the world has changed immensely over the past few decades, and what used to pass for heroism is now ques- tioned, judged and held up as potential criminal behavior. Now, constantly in defense of their life's work, the old age of super- heroism is taking a step back to usher in the new — if only the new heroes knew what they wanted from their duties. Still trying to decide whether they are blessed or cursed with the powers they have been given, the new defenders must learn to put their needs aside to fight for the greater good. With directing credits shared by Charlotte Brän- dström ("The Witcher"), Marc Jobst ("Daredevil"), Christopher J. Byrne ("American Gods") and Steven S. DeKnight ("Pacific Rim: Uprising," 2018), "Jupiter's Legacy" stars Josh Duhamel ("Transformers," 2007), Ben Daniels ("The Exorcist"), Meg Steedle ("Mr. Mercedes"), Anna Akana ("Let It Snow," 2019), Da- vid Julian Hirsh ("Weeds"), Jess Salgueiro ("Workin' Moms") and Leslie Bibb ("Iron Man," 2008), to name a few. WHAT'S NEW ON DISNEY+ "Star Wars: The Bad Batch" May the fourth be with you! And it wouldn't be Star Wars Day without another new series launching on Disney+, now would it? Well, as luck (or the Disney gods) would have it, "Star Wars: The Bad Batch" is happy to fill the intergalactic gap on this fateful day. Following a group, or "Bad Batch," of high-profile ex- perimental clones as they make their way through the galaxy in the aftermath of the Clone Wars, this three-part animated series features the voices of Dee Brad- ley Baker ("American Dad!") and Ming-Na Wen ("Mulan," 1998) in leading roles. Based on the original franchise characters by George Lucas and largely written by screenwriter/producer Jen- nifer Corbett ("NCIS"), the ani- mated miniseries will be rolled out over the course of two weeks on Fridays; the second episode on May 7, and the final episode on May 14. Hannah Levinson as seen in "Ghostwriter" Leslie Bibb, Josh Duhamel and Ben Daniels in "Jupiter's Legacy" Aidy Bryant stars in "Shrill"
