Stepanek charged with theft, possession By James Capozella A report of a theft at the Petersburg Hardware store on April 9 resulted in the ar- rest of Christian Thomas Ste- panek, 24, of 5444 N. State Hwy 257, Otwell, for theft- less than $750, possession of paraphernalia and driv- ing while suspended-prior. Pike County Sheriff Chief Deputy Dallas Killian re- sponded to a report of a theft at the Petersburg Hardware, where Eric Smith advised that a male was using a knife to open a boxed knife from the store, according to the re- port. Officer Killian was ad- vised by Smith that the male left the store driving a sil- ver car and he gave Killian the plate number. He said he could see that the car pulled into Shoultz Eye Care just up the road. Dispatch advised Killian the male subject was Chris- tian Stepanek and that his driver's license was suspend- ed. When Killian arrived at Shoultz Eye Care, Peters- burg Police Chief Chuck Baumgart was there search- ing a male next to the vehicle. Indiana State Trooper Paul Bastin and Pike Coun- ty Deputy Adam Thompson were also at the scene, where the male was identified as Christian Stepanek. Chief Baumgart had removed a pair of linesmen pliers from Stepanek's right sock and had also located a new bot- tle of glue and multiple small paint brushes. When Killian asked Stepanek about the pli- ers, he said he had bought them at Walmart the day be- fore but they were clearly marked Do It Best, accord- ing to the report. When asked about the Ger- ber knife he had in the car, Stepanek said he thought the person in the store that had confronted him took it back. The knife Killian found in the car matched the knife box Killian had gotten from Er- ic Smith at the store. Also lo- cated during a search of Ste- panek was a Bic pen sleeve with white reside inside. Ste- panek said he knew that the residue was Lortab and Ad- derall that he did not have a prescription for, according to the report.
