30 Corning 2021
Corning served as
the home of one of
California's earliest
truck stops in the
1940s and has been
a hot stop for truckers
since.
The city is halfway
between Portland, Ore.
and Los Angeles, and
three truck stops at
South Avenue - Loves,
TA and Petro - take
advantage of the
central location.
Corning's truck stops
are appreciated by the
city for the hundreds of
jobs and the sales tax
revenue they provide.
"They provide a
tremendous amount of
sales tax," said then
City Manager Steve
Kimbrough in 2009. "It's
like having a Walmart
on each of the three
corners."
The truck stops
are Corning's second-
highest source for sales
tax revenue.
The stops, also
called travel centers,
bring $500,000 to the
city every year, giving
Corning the highest
per capita sales tax
revenue in the north
state, helping to fund
the police and fire
departments.
Many jobs in
Corning are at the
truck stops. Each
truck stop employs
more than 100 people,
meaning about 350 to
400 jobs are at the
one intersection.
"Corning has gained
a reputation as a good
place for commercial
development,"
Kimbrough said.
The four-way
stop offers three
good choices so it's
convenient to the
customers.
