Community Foundation receives $100K grant The Pike County Community Founda- tion, an affiliate of the Community Foun- dation Alliance, has received a Communi- ty Leadership Grant of $100,000 as part of the seventh phase of Lilly Endowment Inc.'s Giving Indiana Funds for Tomor- row (GIF T VII) initiative. With the grant, the community foundation will support the Pike County School Corporation's ex- pansion of its Career and Technical Edu- cation (CTE) programs to build relevant industry skills and attract and retain tal- ent in Pike County. As part of GIF T VII, the Pike County Community Foundation was awarded a planning grant of $50,000 in 2019 to con- vene local stakeholders to identify, prior- itize and assess opportunities and chal- lenges in Pike County. In March 2020, the Foundation was invited to apply for a GIF T VII Community Leadership Grant to implement strategies and activities identified during the planning period. Through community meetings, the planning committee identified Pike County's most pressing needs," stat- ed Cindy Gaskins, director of the Pike County Community Foundation. "Giv- en the loss of so many energy-related jobs," she continued, "the committee concluded that the CTE classes were vi- tal to training Pike Countians in differ- ent trades so that they can remain in the community they know and love." The new CTE programs will be offered at the Pike County School Corporation Learning Center and include construc- tion trades (HVAC); construction trades (Electrical); Fire Science; and diesel technology, noted Sarah Belmore, Pike County Community Foundation Adviso- ry Board President. She explained these educational programs will be available to high school students by day and to adult learners after school hours. "We are very excited to be a part of this program as it will equip displaced workers with alter- nate skills permitting them to continue to make Pike County their home," Bel- more added. The Pike County Community Foun- dation is one of 84 foundations in Indi- ana receiving grants through this round of GIF T VII grantmaking. Lilly Endow- ment created GIF T in 1990 to help local communities in Indiana develop the phil- anthropic capacity to identify local needs and challenges. It launched GIF T VII in 2018 and made available a total of $125 million to help foundations strengthen their leadership capacities in the towns, cities and counties they serve. Lilly En- dowment expects to make additional GIF T VII grants in the coming months. "Lilly Endowment Inc. GIF T VII has allowed community foundations to en- hance their partnerships with local or- ganizations to achieve a greater impact in our communities through this phased grant opportunity," says Jill Carpenter, president of the Community Foundation Alliance. "The work that was complet- ed through the planning grant phase al- lowed for all nine affiliates of the Commu- nity Foundation Alliance to successful- ly receive implementation grants. These implementation grants allow us to contin- ue that work, alongside our community partners, and directly impact key devel- opment indicators – leading change for generations to come."
