OCTOBER 2020 HOME 7 notoriously susceptible to insects and birds, plus it requires refinishing. "Today's composite materials stand up to Wisconsin weather. The composite siding has a thick coating that adds to its durability and requires very little maintenance," explains Miller. "For homeowners interested in staying with a vinyl option, there are new materials that help reflect the heat from the sun so it isn't absorbed into the siding." Homeowners also have more color choices for their exterior. Darker, richer colors like deep grays, blues, reds, greens and browns were pre- viously limited to painted wood siding. When to replace windows There are a number of signs that it's time to replace a home's windows — interior con- densation, staining, draftiness and problems with functionality, such as the ability to easi- ly open and close them. There are a plethora of options for replace- ment windows, including vinyl, fiberglass and wood, and each type has pros and cons. "With so many different manufacturers and window choices, it's best to work with a professional who has in-depth knowledge and experience that can help guide home- owners through a process that otherwise can be quite confusing," says Cline. In addition to the functionality that win- dows provide, they can also be used to add drama and architectural detail to almost any space — a family room, kitchen, front entry, bedroom or even a bathroom. For those who have a fantastic view, win- dow walls are a perfect choice. Huge picture windows bring the outside in, filling a room with natural light while making a statement. Bay and bow windows are also popular since they can make a room feel larger and brighter. Both types jut from the home's exte- rior wall, creating a raised platform that can become another design element. Front entries are another place where win- dows and natural light can make a real impact. Ask about the option to add side- lights or a transom to the entry door. Installation matters Whether homeowners are getting a new roof, siding or windows, both Cline and Miller agree that proper, professional instal- lation is imperative. "Most people don't realize it but failures of roofs, siding and windows are typically due to problems with the installation. Usually, it's not the product, it's how poorly the product has been installed," says Cline. To find a proven, experienced and rep- utable company, NARI Milwaukee advises homeowners talk with a few contractors. At the NARI Home & Remodeling Show October 16-18 at State Fair Park, it's easy for home- owners to meet with a number of companies. Vet the contractor by asking a series of ques- tions and perform your own research about the company before signing a contract.
