Brainerd Dispatch • October 11 - 17, 2020 •19 By Dana Simpson TV Media WHAT'S NEW ON NETFLIX "The Trial of the Chicago 7" (2020) Be a part of the action as "the whole world is watching" the events of the 1968 Chicago Demo- cratic National Convention unfold in "The Trial of the Chicago 7," a thrilling new film coming to Netflix on Friday, Oct. 16. From film giant Aaron Sorkin ("A Few Good Men," 1992) comes the riveting true story of the seven people who stood trial for various crimes surrounding the Vietnam War protests at the DNC in Illinois' largest city in the late 1960s. Following the assassinations of human rights activist Martin Lu - ther King Jr. in April and Democratic presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy in June of that year, these riots set the stage for some of the United States' lengthiest and most grueling court proceedings. With acclaimed actor Joseph Gordon Levitt ("50/50," 2011) in the role of leading prosecutor Richard Schultz, the film also stars Sacha Baron Co- hen ("The Spy"), Eddie Redmayne ("The Theory of Everything," 2014) and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II ("Aqua- man," 2018) as the legendary Black Panther Party co-founder, Bobby Seale. "A Babysitter's Guide to Mon- ster Hunting" (2020) Work just doesn't pay well enough for first-time babysitter Kelly Ferguson (Tamara Smart, "The Worst Witch") in "A Babysit- ter's Guide to Monster Hunting," coming to Netflix on Wednesday, Oct 14. When the child she is tasked with minding (Ian Ho, "Blue's Clues & You") is kid- napped by the boogeyman, Kelly teams up with an underground society of babysitters who go to the ends of the earth to protect children from a realm of monsters threatening their safety. This film is based on the first novel in Joe Ballarini's adolescent-fiction tril- ogy and is tasked with continuing the babysitter-film alliance be- tween Netflix and Walden Media, the company that brought us the recent series "The Baby-Sitters Club." Also starring Indya Moore ("Queen & Slim," 2019), Oona Laurence ("The Beguiled," 2017), Momona Tamada ("To All the Boys: P.S. I Still Love You," 2020) and everyone's favorite Harry Pot- ter villain, Tom Felton, this quirky new action flick is directed by the award-winning Rachel Talalay ("The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina"). "Grand Army" Life is anything but easy for the students of the largest high school in Brooklyn, N.Y. in this new series, coming to Netflix on Oct. 16. "Grand Army," a screen adaptation of veteran high school teacher and playwright Katie Cappiello's 2013 play "Slut," follows the life of five teenagers struggling to grapple with the politics surrounding sexuality, race, economics and society at large as they navigate the events of their day-to-day life in one of New York City's most iconic boroughs. "House of Cards" producers Beau Willimon and Joshua Donen have been brought on board as part of the produc- tion team alongside Cappiello herself, and the first season will star Odessa A'zion ("Fam"), Maliq Johnson ("When They See Us"), Amir Bageria ("Degrassi: Next Class"), Amalia Yoo ("J Doe") and newcomer Odley Jean as the central characters. WHAT'S NEW ON HULU "Helstrom" Get ready for a family reunion like no other in the action-packed se- ries "Marvel's Helstrom," coming exclusively to Hulu on Friday, Oct. 16. The children of an infamous and terrifying serial killer, Ana (Sydney Lemmon, "Velvet Buzz- saw," 2019) and Daimon (Tom Austen, "The Royals") Helstrom are forced to deal with their own complicated relationship, their ties to their sinister mother and their unique skills (many of them supernatural) as they hunt down and eliminate some of humanity's worst offenders. The show was created by Emmy-nominated pro- ducer Paul Zbyszewski, of "Lost" and "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." fame, and stars Alain Uy ("True Detective"), Robert Wisdom ("Su- pernatural"), Elizabeth Marvel ("Burn After Reading," 2008) and Ariana Guerra ("Five Feet Apart," 2019) in supporting roles. WHAT'S NEW ON DISNEY+ "Clouds" (2020) Get inspired by "Clouds" this Friday, Oct. 16, on Disney+. This heartwarming cinematic jour- ney, based on Laura Sobiech's memoir "Fly a Little Higher," tells the story of her son, Zach (portrayed by Fin Argus, "Total Eclipse"), and his rise to musical fame while battling a rare and aggressive form of bone cancer at the age of 17. The film was adapted for the screen by Kara Holden ("Carrie Pilby," 2016) and directed and produced by Wayfarer Studios co-founder and "Jane the Virgin" leading man, Justin Baldoni. Starring Sabrina Carpenter ("The Hate U Give," 2018), Madison Ise- man ("Jumanji: The Next Level," 2019) and Thomas Everett Scott ("Because I Said So," 2007) in supporting roles, Neve Campbell ("Scream," 1996) takes on the honored challenge of playing Zach's caring mother and author of the book that started it all. "Meet the Chimps" Take a walk on the wild side with the new series "Meet the Chimps," streaming on Disney+ beginning Friday, Oct. 16. This six-episode series gives view- ers the opportunity to visit the 200-acre chimp sanctuary, Chimp Haven, from the comfort of their couch, learning how the Louisiana home to more than 300 chimpanzees helps these incredibly intelligent and car- ing creatures to get a second chance at life. While the series does prominently feature the caretakers and staff members of Chimp Haven, there is no deny- ing that the chimps are the stars of the show. Disney brings us this series in conjunction with National Geographic and Blink Films – the producers behind the Animal Planet shows "Meet the Penguins" and "Meet the Orangutans" – and, as with most chimp-centric productions, there is sure to be no shortage of play- fulness, heartfelt emotion and food fights. WHAT'S NEW ON PRIME "Evil Eye" (2020) No talisman can save a young woman from her love in the new horror thriller "Evil Eye," com- ing to Prime on Tuesday, Oct. 13. When the beautiful Pallavi (Suni- ta Mani, "Mr. Robot") falls for a handsome, rich and seemingly flawless man (Omar Maskati, "Unbelievable"), her supersti- tious mother (Sarita Choudhury, "A Hologram for the King," 2016) becomes crazed with the idea that he is the reincarnation of the man who tried to kill her years before. Struggling to con- vince her daughter that her sus- picions are true, she asks Pallavi to promise her one thing: never remove the protective evil eye bracelet from around her wrist. Produced by Priyanka Chopra Jonas ("Baywatch," 2017) and Blumhouse Productions founder Jason Blum ("Get Out," 2017), and directed by the Dassani twins, Rajeev and Elan ("Jinn," 2019), "Evil Eye" also stars The Matrix franchise's Rama-Kandra (Bernard White). From the producers that brought us "Get Out," "Sharp Objects" and "Whiplash," "Nocturne" is directed by up-and-coming film talent Zu Quirke ("Ghosting," 2016). Joseph Gordon Levitt stars in "The Trial of the Chicago 7" Alain Uy and Sydney Lemmon as seen in "Helstrom" Fin Argus and Sabrina Carpenter in "Clouds"
