Like other respiratory viruses, COVID-19 is primarily spread through "respiratory droplets" from an infected person. Physical distancing of at least six feet reduces your chances of contracting COVID-19. Wearing a nonmedical cloth face covering in public is also recommended to reduce the risk of transmission. While staying home as much as possible and opting to use curbside pickup or delivery services is recommended, here are a few tips to help protect your health and the health of others during essential trips to the grocery store or pharmacy: Physical isolation from other people can be diffi cult emotionally and mentally, and health organizations are emphasizing the importance of staying socially connected. There are two stories in this week's edition of Rutherford Weekly regarding Christmas shopping for needy children in Rutherford County. The Salvation Army Christmas Cheer Center begins its application process on October 12 for those seeking help with buying toys. The Christopher Ebert Marine Corps League begins its Toys for Tots program on October 1. Please read both of these stories to fi nd out what you can do during the pandemic year as some things have changed. The fact that every child in Rutherford County should have a toy on Christmas morning has not changed. The Marine Corps League in Forest City will begin placing Toys for Tots collection boxes strategically across the county on October 1. Applications also begin that day. Because of social distancing, the application process will be online but the Marines are ready to help anyone that doesn't have internet access. Call 828-447-8526 and speak with coordinator Troy Stanley. He and others are there to help. The Christmas Cheer Center staff begins taking applications at the Family Thrift Store on West Main Street in Forest City on October 12. Hundreds of children each year receive toys and families receive food through the Salvation Army. The Marine Corps League helped nearly 1,000 children and families last year. Stanley, coordinator for Toys for Tots, urges everyone to start buying toys today. Don't wait until the middle of December. He believes the needs will be greater this year since more people are without work and he said there could even be less toys available. We have certainly seen some empty shelves during this pandemic. If you've never participated in buying a toy for the Salvation Army's Christmas Cheer Center or the Toys for Tots, 2020 might be the best year to start the giving programs. As we hear from others about their giving programs, we'll keep you posted. Enjoy this early toy shopping for the children. They depend on it. IT'S NEVER TOO EARLY TO SHOP FOR CHILDREN'S TOYS By: Jean Gordon The Isothermal Community College Board of Trustees has begun a search for a new president to replace Walter Dalton, who will retire in February 2021. The fi rst step for the trustees is to develop a profi le for the position. This profi le sets out the kind of person and types of skills the board would like to see in a new president. To create the profi le, the trustees are seeking input from employees, students, members of the community and other stakeholders. Once the profi le is established a website will be published to share the details about the search including the application process. There are several ways to share your opinion. First, you may complete a four-question survey at https:// www.sur veymonkey.com/r/ isother mal-cc-presidential- search. Second, you may attend one of three public forums on Thursday, Sept. 17: • 10 a.m. — The Foundation Performing Arts and Conference Center • 1 p.m. — Isothermal Polk Center in Columbus • 6 p.m. — The Foundation Performing Arts and Conference Center Space is extremely limited, due to social distancing requirements. Face coverings will be required. Please do not attend if you are running a high temperature or have any symptoms of COVID-19. The sessions will also stream on Facebook Live at www.facebook.com/ isothermal.edu. You do not have to have a Facebook account to view these streams. The forums will be conducted by Kennon Briggs of ACCT Search, the fi rm the trustees have hired to conduct the search. Opinion: What do you want to see in the new ICC president?
