LAURA LEON Program Manager for Community Relations Sinai Health System Leon has more than 25 years of experience creating and leading model sustainable urban development projects, healthcare programs, and public policy advocacy campaigns. She is currently distributing Covid-19 heath education and resources information to community organizations. She led the nationally recognized Robert Wood Johnson Foundation's Illinois Covering Kids and Families Statewide and Chicago Area coalitions. Prior to working on healthcare, she led an urban development that created 48 affordable homes in Humboldt Park and a project in Nayarit, Mexico. AIDA MAISONET GIACHELLO Research Professor Feinberg School of Medicine at Northwestern University Maisonet Giachello holds a Ph.D. and uses research to address health equity and social justice issues. In December 2010 she retired from the University of Illinois at Chicago after 25 years of teaching and research. There she established the Midwest Latino Health Research, Training & Policy Center and conducted health disparities research with a focus on chronic conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, asthma; injury prevention, tobacco, obesity and occupational health. She has developed community interventions used across the U.S. and in Latin America. ERIKA MALDONADO Featured Presenter Univision Chicago Maldonado began her career in her native Venezuela studying social communication at the Andrés Bello Catholic University. She immigrated to the United States in 1998, graduated from Florida International University with bachelor's and master's degrees in journalism, and after holding other positions in radio and television joined the Chicago news team in July 2004 as a general assignments reporter. Her work covering politics, education, events, religion and community stories has been recognized with five Emmy Awards and a Studs Terkel Award. DR. KAREN MANCERA- CUEVAS Deputy Director of Health Promotion Illinois Department of Public Health Mancera-Cuevas previously worked in academic centers emphasizing clinical, public health, and community-based participatory research at the University of Illinois at Chicago and Northwestern University. She has also worked in local nonprofit and policy level settings. Programs developed under her leadership addressed chronic disease health disparities in diverse communities of color, specifically targeting women and children at the community-level. She has a master's degree in public administration and health policy and a doctorate in public health. RODOLFO MEDINA President Second Federal Second Federal is a division of Self-Help Federal Credit Union. Medina manages all operations as well as consumer and mortgage lending for Second Federal. The thriving organization currently holds in excess of $150 million in deposits and serves approximately 14,000 members in three, predominantly Latino, Chicago communities. Medina lived in the Little Village neighborhood as a young child in the 1970s where his parents owned and operated a local business. ROSA MIRANDA Clinical Supervisor Norwegian American Hospital Miranda has been in the healthcare industry since 1989 and at Norwegian American Hospital for the last 26 years. She came to the hospital as a volunteer for the community's first health fair. When she saw patients lined up needing services even after the health fair ended, she stayed until all the patients were seen. When the Covid-19 pandemic hit, she was in early and stayed late to be sure that all the patients could receive care. DR. JAIME MORENO Medical Director Sinai Health System Moreno is a native of Pilsen, a traditionally Mexican- American neighborhood located on the near south side of Chicago. He studied at the University of Illinois at Chicago Medical School and participated in multiple Latino and minority-focused groups such as LaRama and Urban Health Programs. In September 2017, Moreno was promoted to medical director of Sinai Health System and chair of the Emergency Department, fulfilling a lifelong desire and commitment to return to the same neighborhoods he grew up in. JOSE M. MUÑOZ Executive Director La Casa Norte Muñoz leads the city's largest provider of wraparound services for Chicago youth and families experiencing homelessness. During the pandemic, La Casa Norte has served more than 6,629 individuals in Cook, DuPage, Kendall and Kane Counties through its Fresh Market food pantry, emergency shelter, information and referral services, and other housing programs. Muñoz also serves as a Commissioner of the Chicago Park District and as a member of the Illinois Hispanic Employment Plan Advisory Council. XAVIER NOGUERAS President BOCA Media Group Nogueras is one of Illinois' leading political communications strategists. In the past few years, he has been pivotal in the growing progressive movement that helped elect dozens of new leaders into office in Cook and Lake counties. When Covid-19 started to surface, he convened a Zoom meeting with Latino elected officials and medical experts. With a colleague he formalized the group as the Illinois Latino Covid-19. The initiative has been instrumental in advocating for the Latino community's pandemic challenges. DR. FERNANDO ORELLANA Medical Director Holy Cross Hospital Orellana's family is from Ecuador, and he grew up with his three siblings on the north side of Chicago. After graduating from University of Illinois, he took a year to volunteer at Illinois Masonic Medical Center where he developed a passion for helping the most vulnerable. Covid-19 brought unique challenges to the community surrounding Holy Cross Hospital, which became a hot spot. With his team Orellana developed protocols and continued to work tirelessly to serve the community in need. MARIANA OSORIA Vice President Centers at Family Focus Osoria has been a national facilitator and trainer for 20 years. She has worked in social services for nearly 30 year. In her current job she promotes the well-being of children from birth by supporting and strengthening their families in and with their community. Her professional experience includes work in the criminal and civil court systems, community- based organizations, child welfare, immigration, and education system. This gave her a deep understanding of systems that impact community, health and educational development. CRISTINA PACIONE- ZAYAS Associate Vice President of Policy Erikson Institute At Erikson Institute, a child development academic institution, Pacione-Zayas is charged with articulating and executing Erikson's policy agenda to generate systemic solutions leading to equitable opportunities and positive outcomes for young children, families, and communities. She is credited with establishing Erikson's Policy in Action Center where the Early Childhood Leadership Academy helps Illinois leaders advocate for policies that benefit young children and families. She directs the Community Data Lab that provides timely and accessible child well-being data for local leaders. SYLVIA PUENTE Executive Director Latino Policy Forum The forum is a nonprofit that works for equity, justice, and economic prosperity on behalf of Latinos in Chicago and Illinois through public-policy advocacy and analysis on issues including education, housing, and immigration. During more than a decade at the helm of the forum, Puente has grown the organization into a central voice on Latino issues. She was recognized by Hispanic Business magazine as one of the "100 Most Influential Hispanics in the U.S." ENRIQUE RODRIGUEZ Anchor Univision Chicago News Rodriguez was born in Uruapan Michoacán, Mexico, and as a child dreamed of becoming a successful journalist and businessman. He immigrated to Los Angeles in 1985 and graduated from California Northridge State University with degrees in communications and Mexican American studies. Among his most memorable stories during 15 years at Univision Chicago were the visit of Pope Francis to Mexico, the two presidential elections and the first inauguration of Barack Obama. He has received seven Emmy Awards for his work. MICHAEL D. RODRIGUEZ Alderman 22nd Ward Michael D. Rodríguez is Alderman of Chicago's 22nd Ward. He has been a progressive leader on the council as the chief co-sponsor of the Fair Workweek ordinance that passed city council in July 2019, and as co-chief sponsor of an effort to strengthen Chicago's Welcoming City Ordinance, and as Whip of the Chicago Progressive Reform Caucus. He has been on the frontlines of addressing COVID-19, convening hospitals, clinics, community organizations, and residents weekly to coordinate efforts to address the pandemic." CESAR ROLON JR. President & CEO Imagen Marketing Consultants Imagen is a boutique marketing agency specializing multicultural and experiential marketing. Rolon is also the founder of Latino Fashion Week, World Fashion Festival, Latina Expo and this year the Chicago Latino Restaurant Week. When he received an email about the coming Covid-19 pandemic, he helped form Illinois Unidos. What began as a labor of love has become a nationally recognized collaborative advocating for the various challenges faced by Latino communities. ESTHER E. SCIAMMARELLA Executive Director Chicago Hispanic Health Coalition Sciammarella holds a master's degree in clinical psychology from the Illinois Institute of Technology and has been involved in clinical therapy, mental health service delivery, and community support and residential services for refugees and mentally ill clients. She is a fellow of the Hispanic Health Leadership Fellowship Program at Harvard University's John F. Kennedy School of Government. The coalition's mission is to promote healthy behavior and prevent chronic disease in the Hispanic community. BLANCA SOTO Executive Director Little Village Chamber of Commerce For more than 30 years the chamber has promoted the growth and success of businesses in Little Village and worked to leverage the community's unique cultural identity to generate new opportunities. Prior to her appointment, Soto served as managing director for seven years.
