La informa- ción recabada por la Oficina del Censo será utilizada para determinar, entre otras co- sas, la necesidad de progra- mas y servicios a la población, desde almuerzos escolares a programas de salud, a repre- sentación de la comunidad en Washington DC. Aquellos grupos que no son contados o que están repre- sentados erróneamente co- rren el riesgo de perder re- cursos fundamentales para su vida cotidiana. Es por ello que es tan importante que todos sean considerados y contados. Los grupos más difíciles de contar, como por ejemplo las comunidades más pobres y de bajos recursos, son, iró- nicamente, aquellos con más necesidad de representación y quienes más se beneficiarían siendo contados. Otro de los grupos más difíciles de con- tar son los niños menores de cinco años de edad. Niños sin representación Durante el censo previo que tuvo lugar en 2010, casi un millón de niños de 0 a 5 años de edad no fue contado, esto resultó en que el 4.6% de la población infantil no tuviera representación en estos últi-mos diez años. "Cuando por ejemplo los padres no incluyen a sus be- bés recién nacidos en el con- teo, estos niños pierden repre- sentación y sus necesidades no son consideradas hasta el próximo censo", indicó el doctor Ilan Shapiro (@Dr_ Shaps), Director médico de educación de salud y bien- estar de AltaMed, en entre- "Hay quienes nos dicen que están totalmente comprome- tidos en divulgar y apoyar los esfuerzos de la Oficina del Censo. Hay quienes di- cen entender su importan- cia y quieren saber más so- bre maneras de empoderar a sus pacientes. Y hay quienes dicen estar demasiado ocu- pados y que no tienen inte- rés en apoyar el conteo na- cional", describió Shapiro. "Gracias a Dios la mayor parte de los médicos pertene- cen a las dos primeras cate- gorías. Ahora que tenemos la posibilidad de ser contados, debemos aprovecharla. Si no participamos no nos van a contar y cuando no nos con- tabilizan, perdemos repre- sentación y no contamos", concluyó. Razones por las cuales los niños no son contados Según información de la Ofi- cina del Censo, los motivos más comunes por los cuales madres y padres no incluyen a sus hijos más pequeños en el conteo nacional son los si- guientes: 1. Niños que viven en más de un hogar. Este es el caso de hijos de padres separados que alternan su custodia, o de menores que viven con sus abuelos u otros parien- tes. En el caso de que el niño pase más tiempo en una de las viviendas, deberá ser in- cluido en dicho hogar. Si el menor pasa la misma can- tidad de tiempo en ambos hogares, debe ser contado en la vivienda donde estuvo o estará el 1 de abril. 2. Niños en hogares pobres y de bajos recursos. Las fami- lias en esta situación deben recordar que la adjudicación de $675,000 millones de dó- lares en fondos locales para programas de estampillas de comida (Supplemental Nutri- tional Assistance Program, o SNAP; programas de al- muerzos escolares (Natio- nal School Lunch Program) y el programa de seguro de salud (CHIP) dependen del conteo exacto de los niños. Cuando los menores no son considerados corren el riesgo de perder dichos programas. 3. Hijos de madres y padres jóvenes, o hijos de madres solteras. Hay quienes creen que responder a las preguntas del Censo toma demasiado tiempo, cuando en realidad no es así. Madres y padres deben saber que el cuestio- nario sólo toma 10 minutos para completar. Aquellos que responden de inmediato ya sea por correo o por la inter- net, no recibirán la visita de encuestadores en su vivienda. 4. Bebés recién nacidos. Madres y padres deben in- cluir a los más pequeños, in- cluso a los recién nacidos. La información recabada será vi- gente por una década y de no ser incluidos, los niños per- derán representación hasta 2030, cuando ya tengan 10 años de edad. Cuando no se cuentan todos los menores, las autoridades, por ejem- plo, pueden reducir o cance- lar programas de cuidado de niños para madres y padres que salen a trabajar fuera del hogar, por creer que no exis- te una cantidad suficiente de menores y una necesidad real que amerite dichos fondos. Otros recursos cuyos fon- dos dependen del conteo in- cluyen guarderías, programas para niños con desafíos físicos y mentales o con problemas de desarrollo. Las necesidades de los niños que no son con- tados, no serán considerados por los próximos diez años. Shapiro recordó que los médicos no siempre pueden intervenir en las cuestiones personales de sus pacientes, pero al mismo tiempo des- tacó la importancia y la in- fluencia que puede tener una conversación sobre el tema, debido a la confianza que madres y padres depositan en los médicos. "Con todo lo que está ocu- rriendo a nuestro alrededor, muchas veces no sabemos a quién escuchar, a quién creer. Es por ello que que- remos empoderar a la comu- nidad médica a que tenga esa conversación con sus pacien- tes", explicó el galeno. Shapiro compartió que hasta el momento han teni- do tres tipos de respuestas de la comunidad médica.
