Rutherford Housing Partnership Inc. has received a grant of $20,000 from the Sisters of Mercy of North Carolina Foundation to continue its work providing urgent home repairs for eligible homeowners. Sisters of Mercy of NC Foundation is a ministry of the Institute of the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas, extending their outreach through community-based philanthropy. Since 1996, the foundation has awarded 2,019 grants totaling more than $90,500,000 to organizations serving unserved or underserved populations in the areas of education, health care and social services. RHP has been helping low-income residents of Rutherford County since 1995. The most common projects tackled by RHP include repairing leaky roofs, broken windows and doors; installing handrails and/ or handicap ramps; and replacing bathroom and kitchen fl ooring. Volunteer teams provide as much labor as possible, and RHP provides materials. The Sisters of Mercy funds will specifi cally provide $12,000 in professional services for those RHP projects outside the scope of volunteer labor and $8,000 for projects completed by volunteers. "RHP has benefi ted from longstanding support from the Sisters of Mercy, for which we are grateful," said Billy Honeycutt, RHP board president. "We continue to appreciate the foundation's support of our work." To be eligible for help from RHP, applicants must own their homes, the repairs must correct a health or safety problem, and the household income must be half of the median income in Rutherford County or lower.
