Red Foothills Conservancy of North Carolina invites the public to attend an event on Saturday, March 28, to celebrate the conservancy's successful purchase of the fi rst section of land for the Oak Hill Community Park and Forest. The celebration will be held from 5-8 p.m. at the Oak Hill United Methodist Church, 2239 N.C. Highway 181 in Morganton. Two months prior, on Jan. 28, Foothills Conservancy purchased 330 acres of the 651-acre proposed park property in the Oak Hill community. With the fi rst phase complete, fundraising is underway to purchase the remaining 321 acres of the park property by June. Honoring this huge step in the project's progress, the event begins with a guided hike on the property at 5 p.m., followed by a cookout, marshmallow roast and lawn games from 6-8 p.m. at the church's outdoor shelter. The event's location, however, wasn't chosen by chance. The Oak Hill United Methodist Church holds special meaning to this park project, to the community and to Foothills Conservancy staff. "The fi rst section of land that we p u r c h a s e d is essentially the church's backyard, and Pastor Paul McClure and his c o n g r e g a t i o n have been paramount in the success of this fi rst phase of funding," said Foothills C o n s e r va n c y 's E x e c u t i v e Director Andrew Kota. "Last year, they hosted Foothills Conservancy in their multipurpose activity center for two community meetings that helped spark community interest and initiate private fundraising." The conservancy is hopeful about the acquisition of the second phase of the property. "Although we still have fundraising to do, we didn't want to pass up the opportunity to celebrate the signifi cant progress we have made by purchasing the fi rst phase, 330 acres of the 651- acre parcel," said Associate Director Beth Willard-Patton. "We hope people of all ages will join us for some classic cookout food and casual conversation at this celebration!" Those interested in attending must RSVP by calling or emailing Sophie Shelton at 828- 437-9930 or sshelton@ foothillsconservancy.org. This event is free and open to the public. Foothills Conservancy of North Carolina is a nationally accredited regional land trust that inspires conservation in Western North Carolina by permanently protecting land and water for the benefi t of people and all living things. A 501(c)(3) nonprofi t, Foothills Conservancy serves eight counties: Alexander, Burke, Caldwell, Catawba, Cleveland, Lincoln, McDowell, and Rutherford, in three major river basins: the Broad, Catawba, and Yadkin.
