Born Sept. 25, 1911, in Mary Goode Madison, Wallis she was the daughter of Michael E. and Bess (Hampton) Garber. Wallis was a graduate of Wellesley College in Wellesley, Mass. Early in her life she was a legal secretary in Louisville and after her marriage, lived in Columbus, Ohio, for six years. For many years, she and her late husband owned and operated The Madison Courier, which has been in F ormer co-publisher of the Ferdinand News and Spen��cer County Leader, Paul Michael Ash, 63, of Ferdinand, died Thurs�� day, March Paul M. Ash 28, 2013, at his home. He was born May 16, 1949, in Chicago to Robert Sr. and Mary Jane (Grosvenor) Ash. He married the former Miriam Tretter on June 16, 1978, in Marengo Cave. Subscriptions $25 per year. Ad rates furnished upon request. A Vietnam War veteran, he retired in 2010 as co-publisher and co-owner of DSC Publishing Co. Inc., publishers of the Ferdinand News and Spencer County Leader. Also an accomplished singer-songwriter, he was awarded an Indiana Arts Commission Grant to write songs focused on Indiana history. His memberships in���� cluded the Indiana Karst Conservancy, Ferdinand VFW Post 11365, Ferdinand American Legion Post 124, and was a National Speleological Society member for many years. Survivors include his wife, Miriam Ash of Ferdinand; one daughter, Carla StriegelWinner and her husband, Jamie Winner of Ferdinand; his mother, Mary Jane Wigand of Paoli; two brothers, Robert Ash Jr. of Elma, Wash., and Chris Wigand of Paoli. He was preceded in death by his father, Robert Ash Sr., his stepfather, Oscar Wigand and by one brother, Donald Ash. ��� Ferdinand News/ Spencer County Leader HNE leader receives national award A Home News Enter�� prises editor has been named editor of the year in a nationwide contest. Scarlett Syse, former editor of the Daily Journal Scarlett Syse (Franklin), has won the award from the Local Media Association. She was selected among editors of newspapers of all sizes across the country. Syse is now group editor of four publications for HNE, the Daily Journal���s parent company. The award honors an editor who has strong management skills, leads readership initiatives and demonstrates community involvement, innovation and a commitment to quality journalism. Daily Journal reporters, editors and photographers also received several awards, including the top honor for community service, in the Local Media Association Editorial Contest. The association is a non-profit, professional trade association for more than 2,000 suburban and community newspapers. HNE group Publisher Chuck Wells nominated Syse for the award. In his letter to judges, Wells wrote that Syse exemplifies what the company wants from editors and staff. ���We want managers who roll up their sleeves and work directly with our talented staff to create compelling content delivered in an appealing way. Simply put, Scarlett gets it,��� Wells wrote. Syse joined the Daily Journal in 1999 and led the newspaper through sig�� nificant changes and community events and issues, including the flood of 2008. She was a member of the Madison Presbyterian Church, where she had taught Sunday school and was the oldest living member at the time of her death. Formerly, she held memberships in Historic Madison Inc., the MadisonJefferson County Library Board, where she was a former president, the Jefferson County Association of Retarded Citizens, where she served on the board and was instrumental in the founding of what is now Sandstone Industries, TriKappa Sorority, Jefferson County Historical Society, King���s Daughters��� Hospital and Hospice volunteer. Survivors include one daughter, Jane W.
