Make this the year you plan your gar- den for the best return on your investment. First, prepare a list before placing your catalogue or- der or making that first trip to the garden center. With- out a bit of pre-planning our carts end up filled with more seeds and plants than space available or varieties that are not suited to our grow- ing conditions or our fami- ly's taste. Make sure each plant you select provides the greatest return on investment by in- cluding winning varieties with a visit to the All-Ameri- ca Selections (A AS) website (all-americaselections.org). This non-profit trialing orga- nization has test sites across the US and Canada that tri- al and select winning variet- ies for their taste and garden performance. Review your favorite rec- ipes and consider growing the ingredients you need on a regular basis. Salad lov- ers may want to plant a con- tainer of greens that can be harvested daily. Sandy Let- tuce and colorful mild fla- vored Red Kingdom Mizu- na are slow to bolt, extend- ing the harvest into warmer months. Add some super nu- tritious Prizm kale for your morning smoothies and sal- ads. Prizm's stemless stalks releaf quickly after harvest so you'll have a continuous supply. Fill a corner of the garden or container with a small- fruited tomato or two for salads, snacking and oth- er daily treats. Red Celano grape tomato (a determi- nate for containers) and the light-yellow sweet Firefly to- mato (an indeterminate for vertical or staked gardens) are attractive and very pro- ductive, ensuring more than enough for your whole fami- ly to enjoy. Add a bit of crunch and color by growing Roxanne radishes. And don't forget the cucumbers. Green Light cucumbers are seedless, sweet and prolific – great for salads or a refreshing sum- mer drink. Keep a constant supply of these ingredients by making small plantings throughout the season. Grow several containers of tasty and attractive Delizz strawberries. These ever- bearing plants will provide a pretty pot of fresh strawber- ries throughout the summer for your morning oatmeal or afternoon glass of wine. Plant unusual vegetables you can't purchase at the grocery store. Roulette pep- per has the look and citrusy flavor of a habanero without the heat. And you won't find anything like Yellow Apple tomato at the store. It has small unique apple-shaped fruit with a citrusy sweet fla- Pancakes and 4-H Kim Haycraft flips pancakes and is assisted by Noah Berry during the Pike County's 4-H enrollment pancake breakfast on Saturday at the 4-H Building in Hornady Park. Pancakes were provided for those wanting to enroll in 4-H. Enrollment for 2020 year is underway. Students ages kindergarten to senior in high school can participate. Pike County has 11 4-H Clubs with diverse interests ranging from shooting sports to horses to more traditional 4-H clubs. See GARDEN on page 10
