Born and raised in Hancock County, Shields returned as publisher of Daily Reporter and as the executive over its commercial printing operations in February 1997. He previously worked as Publisher for publications in Missouri and South Dakota. During his time at the Daily Reporter, Shields led the staff to record newspaper circulation and managed the expansion of commercial printing operations. Under his leadership, the Daily Reporter consistently received top awards for excellence from the Hoosier State Press Association (HSPA), the Inland Press Associa- tion and the Associated Press (AP). An editorial he co-wrote with David Hill, the Daily Report- er's editor, in 2010 won "Editorial of the Year" honors from both HSPA and AP. He retired in 2014 as Vice President of Home News Enterprises Printing, the former parent company of the Daily Reporter. Born in Fortville, IN, he was known from a young age for his grit, goal setting and determination — as a person whose thinking was outside the box and as one who aggres- sively pursued excellence. In September 2018, metastatic pancreatic cancer was discovered and Shields and his wife Patrice moved to Bethesda, MD, to continue his treatment and be closer to their children. Shields fought to find peace with the disease. Asked by a friend how he kept his spirits up in the midst of the battle, he replied, "I set goals for myself and work toward them. And, I always remember there are a lot of people who suffer worse things." In a letter to close friends and relatives in July 2019, Shields said, "Life has been good." He told of the joy of his marriage to Patrice and the love and pride he held for his children. Also, in classic Randall form he admonished those who would promote division in our country rather than unity through civil discourse. He ended with: "Where are the morally sound, rational, intelligent uniters in both parties? Why have they been driven aground? I guess the answer is 'blowing in the wind'." He was born July 14, 1948 in Kokomo, IN, to the late Francesco Rocchio and Maddalena Castaldo Rocchio. Rocchio was a 1966 graduate of Kokomo High School and attended the University of Notre Dame where he graduated with a Bachelor of Journalism degree in 1970. He received his Master of Journalism from Ball State University in 1975. He worked as a newspaper reporter, columnist, and editor for 32 years at the Kokomo Tribune and the Northwest Indiana Times in Valparaiso. While working at the Kokomo Tribune, he met the love of his life, Sharon Stahl and they were married June 14, 1975. Pasquale and Sharon moved to Indianapolis to be near their children and grandchildren, whom they adored more than anything else. He was a devoted member of Little Flower Catholic Church in his neighborhood. Rocchio was passionate about his Italian heritage and was certain that most extraordinary individuals in history had Italian roots. He obtained his Italian citizenship in 2017. Rocchio was a lifelong scholar of many things, especially the Civil War. He was an artist and liked to paint and draw. He loved Notre Dame Football and all baseball. He was kind, generous, humble, and wickedly funny. His favorite thing in life was spending time with his friends and family, who will all miss his presence immensely. In his later years he fought bravely with Alzheimer's disease. Not one to hide from duty he became a public advocate by sharing his story and struggle in a feature film. His family would like to thank all the people who helped in his care and all those working tirelessly to end this disease. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Sharon and two grandchildren. Memorial contributions may be made in Rocchio's honor to Joy's House, 2028 Broad Ripple Avenue, Indianapolis, IN 46220, online at www.joyshouse.org.
