Assisted Living • Memory Care RCFE#445202292 travelling to Bolivia with the Helen Keller Institute to provide surgical eye care to underserved communities. "The opportunity to see the life-changing and sight- restoring services was transformative," he shares. "When I returned to New York, I immediately changed trajectories to ophthalmology and have never looked back." He feels that cataract surgery is one of the most successful surgeries in the history of medicine, with outstanding results that can improve and restore a patient's quality of life. He definitely chose the right career. "I love ophthalmology," says Dr. Allaman. "It is a surgical specialty that also allows for continued, long- term care of patients for decades beyond their surgery, creating a special bond with patients." In early July, Dr. Allaman used a new piece of equipment for the first time. "The miLoop is a welcome tool to our ASC to help patients that may be deemed inoperable," says Dr. Allaman. "Cypress is very pleased to have this sophisticated device to help our patients with complicated cataracts." The miLoop, a hand held device, is used to fragment the lens in patients with very advanced (dense) cataracts, to allow safer cataract extraction with less energy used in the eye (via ultrasound) and less stress on the zonules which hold the cataractous lens. "Some people call Santa Cruz a sleepy town, but we've got state of the art technology," Dr. Allaman adds. He is still an active volunteer for individuals in need. Twice a year, he visits Nicaragua to donate his time with the Roberto Clemente Clinic in Tola- Salinas, Riva. He is also a designated VA doctor. Dr. Allaman has four kids, two boys and two girls, including a special needs child. He's engaged to be married to a local dental surgeon, Dr. Marilynn Reinhardt, who specializes in serving special needs patients throughout Santa Cruz, Monterey and Santa Clara. Dr. Allaman appreciates his surroundings a great deal. "I love Santa Cruz because of the small town feel, despite the traffic," he shares. "I live in the Seacliff community and enjoy the outdoor life of Santa Cruz County, including surfing, biking, and hiking in the redwoods. We also enjoy the Alpine lifestyle and spend time in the Rockies every year."
