B-2 Wednesday, February 27, 2013 The Press-Dispatch H Chargers come close NETedition Exclusive video Damon Schnarr looks to see what he can do with the basketball after it bounced into his hands during the game with Northeast Dubois. Chargers JV crew falls to Dubois in overtime By Mike Johansen The season ended with a valiant effort by the Pike Central Chargers JV with overtime against the Northeast Dubois Jeeps, but the final result was a three point loss. The Chargers JV fell behind early in the extra three minute period and could not catch up, losing to the Jeeps JV 44-41 Friday night at home. The Chargers also lost to the South Knox JV on Feb. 19, but details and statistics from the game were not available. The Chargers were without two JV starters because of an injury and another situation. The Chargers started the game with a fast paced first quarter and found the basket often during the six minute stretch. Stefano Dalla Vecchia opened the scoring 22 seconds into the game with a jump shot. Jordan Clore took a pass from Damon Schnarr and nailed a three pointer a short time later. Dalla Vecchia got the ball inside for another short shot and a basket and was fouled. He completed the three point play for an 8-0 lead with 3:65 on the clock. The Jeeps JV scored a basket, but the Chargers answered with a two from Levi Tryon off a pass from Clore, who had two assists in the game. After another Jeeps basket, Tryon had another and Dakota Walker scored a two for a 14-4 lead. Tryon had the final basket of the period as well to give the Chargers a 16-6 margin. The second quarter was slow for both teams with Northeast Dubois getting the fist point. A basket by Walker put the lead up to 18-7 and another basket by Zach Hulsman with 3:22 remaining had the Chargers on top 20-7. That would be the last basket of the quarter for the Chargers as they would close the half with a free throw to remain ahead by 10, 21-11. The defense stayed solid throughout, forcing a couple of turnovers and six missed shots. The Chargers stayed cold on the scoring end in the third period, while the Jeeps warmed up and cut the difference by four points. The Chargers opened with two free throws by Tryon and a basket by Dalla Vecchia had them in front 25-14 with 4:13 remaining in the quarter. The Chargers did not score again until 1:23 remained, when Hulsman had a three point play. The Chargers also did not allow another basket the final 1:23 and led 28-22 with one quarter left. The Jeeps went on a 10-2 run in the final quarter as only a basket by Dalla Vecchia interrupted the comeback that tied the score at 32 with 1:34 remaining. The Chargers had three turnovers in the final 1:34 and the Jeeps missed two free throws and two shots leaving the score at 32-32 at the end of regulation. The Jeeps scored eight points in overtime to take a commanding lead during the extra three minutes. Dalla Vecchia had a basket and Schnarr a free throw and a three point play to cut the difference to four, 38-42, with 28.6 seconds to play. Dubois made one of two free throws with 25 seconds remaining and the Chargers missed a chance to cut the deficit. The Jeeps made another free throw with 10.3 seconds remaining. The Chargers did make three of four free throws in the final 10 seconds, but could not come any closer than the final three point difference. Stefano Dalla Vecchia led the way with 13 points, Levi Tryon 10, Jordan Clore 4, Zach Hulsman 5, Damon Schnarr 4, Ty Hickey 1 and Dakota Walker 4. Walker had 13 rebounds, 5 on the offensive boards; Tryon 4, Schnarr 3, Dalla Vecchia 4 and Clore 4. Schnarr had three assists and three steals. Baskets by Garland and Toopes chipped away at the lead, but the Spartans came back with a two and a three to lead 39-28 with 3:59 to go. After a time out, the Chargers roared back with a three-point play by Chris Downey. Two free throws each from Dustin Meny and Aldridge had the difference down to seven, 35-42. The Spartans made the final basket of the third period for a 44-35 lead. The Chargers roared back early in the fourth quarter on a basket by Garland and a three by Claridge. Eck added two free throws and two free throws by Garland had the game tied up at 4444 with 5:08 to play. After Pike Central missed a shot, the Spartans got the ball back and went into a delay game, working more than 1:20 off the clock. The Chargers had to foul and the Spartans made two free throws to lead 49-45 with 34 seconds remaining. PC missed a shot and South Knox rebounded. They missed the front end of a one-and-one. The Chargers fouled in the in-bounds play and the Spartans Isaiah Stafford made two free throws to sow up the game. Garland made the final shot with no time remaining for the final difference of three points, 52-49. Andrew Scott led South Knox with 20 points. Garland had 18 for Pike Central and Claridge 10. The Chargers had their best scoring quarter in the opening stanza. Downey, Meny and another basket by Downey came off passes by Claridge and Eck for a 6-0 lead. Garland had a three point play to increase the margin to 9-4. Baskets by Downey and Garland had the Chargers on top 13-6 with 3:19 to play. The Jeeps closed the gap some, but a basket from Toopes and one by Garland gave the Chargers a 17-13 edge at the end of the quarter. Garrett Elliott opened the second period with a three off a pass from Claridge for a 20-13 lead. Another three by Elliott and a three by Aldridge put the Chargers on top 26-15 with 5:47 remaining in the half. The Jeeps would not make much of a dent in that lead the rest of the way. A Claridge three had the Chargers on top by 12 points and he followed up with a two points for a 31-17 margin with 2:07 remaining. Northeast Dubois cut into the lead with the next two baskets, but the Chargers had a three point play by Eck to end the scoring in the first half and leave Pike Central on top 34-21 at halftime. Pike Central had six turnovers in the second quarter, otherwise the lead would have been greater. The Jeeps put on the press in the second half and that seemed to make a little difference. The Chargers scoring machine was much more quiet in the third period. Meny made a free throw for a 3521 and Eck nailed a shot for a 37-23 margin. A basket by Claridge had the Chargers on top 39-25 with 4:09 remaining in the period. However, Pike Central would not score again and the Jeeps would post 11 points to cut the margin to seven, 39-32. The Jeeps scored the first basket of the final period in regulation, but Pike Central came back for baskets by Garland and Downey off feed passes from Toopes for a 43-34 lead with 4:58 to play. The Jeeps cut the lead to four with two quick baskets, but Aldridge answered with a two pointer with 3:47 to play. Pike Central missed the front end of a one-andone as Northeast Dubois worked its way back in the game with two baskets and a three to take a 46-45 lead. Pike Central missed the next shot and Dubois was fouled, making both free throws for a 48-45 edge with 20.4 seconds to play. Pike Central got the ball down and Garland let fly a shot from long distance with eight seconds to play to tie the game. The Jeeps got the ball back down court, missed a shot but rebounded and threw up a wild shot at the buzzer that did not draw iron. In the extra four minutes, the Jeeps scored the first basket with 3:49 to play. The Chargers worked the ball patiently on offense and Claridge took a long shot for three points with 2:34 left for a 51-50 Pike Central lead. The Jeeps took 25 seconds to answer with a two pointer at 2:19 to regain the lead by one. The Chargers again missed the front end of a one-and-one with 55.7 seconds to play. The Chargers got the ball right back, but turned the ball back on a miscue. The Jeeps called time out with 33 seconds left. The Chargers had to foul and the Jeeps Cameron Riecker made two free throws with 21 seconds to play for a 54-51 edge. The Chargers got a shot, but missed, but got the rebound.
