By Catherine Jozwik Special to Waukesha County Home As the cost of living increases, a greater number of adults, locally and nationwide, are choosing to live with their parents. Mike Ruzicka, president of the Greater Milwaukee Association of Realtors, attributes longer life spans to the increase of several generations of family members liv- ing under one roof. "We've all heard of older people outliving their savings," he said. According to a 2018 survey by the National Association of Realtors, 9 percent of Milwaukee house- holds are multigenerational, com- pared with 12 percent nationwide. Ruzicka noted that multigenera- tional living in the Greater Mil- waukee area is common among Asian and Hispanic families, par- ticularly immigrants. "You can easily see up to three generations living together in one household," Ruzicka said. Shorewest Real Estate agent Jodi Miller cites finances as being a main factor in intergenerational home buying. Combining finances often enables families to make a home purchase. "It allows people to be able to afford a larger home in an area where they (otherwise) couldn't afford to live," Miller said, adding that many families tend to gravi- tate to Waukesha County, where homes are typically larger than in Milwaukee County. Elder care, child care Many adult children act as care- givers to aging and ailing parents. For families with young children, having grandparents in the house can help working parents ease the burden of child care costs. Mukwonago resident Erin Simon and her husband, who have three children, ages 9, 6, and 1, pur- chased a five-bedroom home with Simon's mother in August. Simon's father passed away in 2016.
