A business that, with the proper care, would blossom in- to a multi-building, full-service facility offering equipment and parts sales, as well as service for outdoor power equip- ment. Rick Knapp, a Haubstadt native, began working for the Hipps at 17 years old and purchased the business in 1983. He has proudly kept it family-owned and operated, alongside son-in-law and daughter, Drew and Katie Harvey. To- gether, they have ensured that Scotty's continues to grow. HEATING & AIR: American-made units with high standards By Andy Heuring Benner and Company Heating and Air last year became the only local HVAC company to offer their own line of HVAC units. "is is a game changer. It is exciting," said Carl Benner. After years of selling Bryant and Daikin systems from their Petersburg- based offices, Benner is now offering their own line of HVAC systems under the name Benner and Company. Benner said it allows him to offer HVAC systems with a lifetime warran- ty that will not just replace a failed main component, but a brand new unit even 20 years later. Last year, a representative of Daikin contacted Benner about selling his own brand. Benner explained Daikin is the largest manufacturer of heating and air condi- tioner units in the world. "ey wanted to make dealer specif- ic equipment, where we set the param- eters and what we want in it and they build it to our specifications, our war- ranties." "At first I was leery, I wondered why us." "ey said, we were in a prime loca- tion and a prime dealer. We had a lot of training, like NATE (North American Training Excellence), which involves 400 hours of training a year on all as- pects of HVAC." "e more and more we talked about it, the more I felt we were the right deal- er to do it," said Benner. He and his son, Corey, went to Dai- kin's plant in Houston. At nearly 40 acres under roof, Benner said Daikin's two-year-old plant is the largest and most advanced HVAC plant in North America. Carl and Corey went through three days of training and learning about Dai- kin's manufacturing process and prod- ucts. "It was intense training. One day we started at 6:30 a.m. and went until 7:30 p.m." "We met and talked with every en- gineer who designed each part of their units and met every department head," said Carl. He said Daikin offered to manufac- tured HVAC units to Benner's specifi- cations. "We decided to do this. eir equipment is made 100 percent in America. No other manufacturer can say that because all of them get some parts from Mexico or elsewhere and they use 100 percent American work- ers." "We met line workers, all the way to the CEO. What we saw was totally amazing. eir technology and process- es are way ahead of everyone one else," said Carl. He said the heat exchangers are made different. He explained the UL certification takes 40,000 burn cycles to receive certification. Most manufacturers re- quire 50,000 to 75,000 cycles. But the new Benner and Co. systems require 125,000 and a unit being tested to see how long it will last is up to just under two million cycles. "at is incredible. It is different than any other furnace on the market." Carl said the standard clam shell de- sign might start out with 95 percent ef- ficiency, but after four or five years will decrease to about 90 percent. After so many times opening and closing, they stay open a little bit and efficiency drops off. "is furnace doesn't drop off," he said. Because of that design, they are able to offer a lifetime warranty on the top three models. If a heat exchanger or compressor goes out, they will replace it with a whole new unit, not just a new compressor or heat exchanger." "ere are 10-year warranties out there by other companies, but they will just replace the compressor or heat ex- changer. With us, you will get a whole new unit." He said there are some labor war- ranties as well, but "you have to buy the warranties." Another feature is their Bluetooth technology. He said they have an app that allows them to run diagnostics on the units to see not only problems that have occurred, but ones that might hap- pen in the future. e same technology allows owners to control their units remotely from anywhere in the world. "You can be on vacation in Hawaii and set your ther- mostat." "ese are things we wanted to do. No one else will give you a new unit if your compressor goes out. ey might in the first few months, but not 20 years down the road. All the units have 10-year war- ranties, and lifetime heat exchangers. e Patriot, Americana and Eagle units have lifetime unit replacements." "It is exciting. It is all new. It is a game changer and it will set a new standard," said Carl. Benner and Company units will be offered in four different efficiency lev- els: e Heritage Series with a single- stage furnace with 95 percent AFUE and 14 seer for A/C or Heat Pump Sys- tem; e Patriot Series with 96.5 per- cent efficiency two-stage furnace and 16 seer A/C or heat pump; the Ameri- cana Series with 97 to 98 percent mod- ulating furnace and 16 to 18 seer A/C or heat pump; and the Eagle Series with 98 percent modulating furnace and 20 seer with A/C or 21 seer with heat pump. e units are warehoused in Evans- ville so they will be available the same day, instead of having to order a unit and waiting on it to be delivered. eir first Benner and Company unit arrived last Wednesday and they in- stalled it on Friday. As a promotion, they are offering a "bounty on old furnace and air condi- tioning units." Carl said if anyone refers a customer to them and that customer buys a fur- nace, air conditioner or HVAC system, the person who referred them to Ben- ner will get $100.
