Together we improve the health of aging adults, our environment and our community. W hile Domini- can Hospital's royal purple- clad volunteers may be best known for cheerfully assisting visitors at our reception desks and staff- ing the hospitality cart, the Dignity Health Dominican Hospital Volunteer Pro- gram has made an impact in nearly every area of the hospital. Celebrating its 64th anniversary this year, the program was established to provide leadership both in raising funds to support hospital programs and in the field of hospital volunteerism. ge focus has recently moved away from fundraising, which is now expertly managed by the Dominican Hospital Foundation. Since records were first kept in 1965, the program's donations to the hospital total more than $2.25 million. ge monies are donated to the Dominican Hospital Foundation and thus far have supported the hospital's Katz Cancer Resource Center, patient education, physical thera- py, paramedic equipment (and other equipment used throughout the hospital), renovation projects, the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit nursery, and cardiac catheterization labs. In 2018 alone, Domini- can Hospital volunteers gave more than 21,000 hours of service. Our oldest volunteers are tied at 90, while our youngest volunteers are just 16. gis National Volunteer Week, the Dominican Hospital family of nurses, medical staff physicians, and employees give thanks to the many women, men, and young adults who so generously give their time and talent to further our mission of a healthy com- munity! I n his career as a psy- chiatric social worker, Jon day dreamed of working in a cozy, little bookstore. So when he be- gan volunteering with Grey Bears in 2012, he was natu- rally drawn to the books. At that time, the book section of the store consisted of one small table. Today, the book store has blossomed into a full store, with a rich variety of books ranging in subjects, languages, and even published dates. ge oldest books seen in the store today were printed in the 1800s. Michele, the other volunteer joining him in the bookstore today, was a librarian before she began volunteering at Grey Bears. Michele shared her favorite part of volunteering, "It's so social here! I have been able to make friends with volunteers and customers. gere is such a diversity of volunteers, and I have been able to learn about so many different cultures. I actually just went to a Celtic music concert with another vol- unteer last week! " With at least 300 volunteers at Grey Bears every week, it's no surprise volunteers make so many friends. Of course, not all 300 volunteers work with books. gere is a clothing store, housewares store, medical supplies, electron- ics store that need knowl- edgeable volunteers to help in all these areas. gere also are composting and recycling programs, classes, food distribution program for seniors and an office. Jon had a few words to share with anyone looking to volunteer and give back, "Whatever your interest, Grey Bears has a place for you: from the office, to the thric stores, to processing and assembling bags of food. It's really laid back at Grey Bears and we have a lot of fun."
